Styled Steel Wheels?

Hi Guys,
Were the styled steel wheels (similar to the one pictured) available as an option with any '67, '68 Cougar model?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

They were. However the one you have a picture of is not quite correct. The correct wheel is 14x6 and the outer edge of the rim is painted black. And there is a stainless steel trim ring that goes over it. Its quite common in the after market to use the all chrome version as your picture shows so you don’t have to deal with the trim rings. Here is a picture from WCCC that shows the correct wheel with trim

Thanks 68gurney

Too bad they are not available as an option anymore. There are no plans to have them made again so you’ll have to find a used set and have them restored.

Please tell us what you know? Several sites show them available to order. Is there only one manufacturer?

Just the 14x6 original, or all versions like the 15" all chrome ones.

I was wondering the same thing after reading that post.
Steven

I just recently bought a complete set of 5 from WCCC earlier this year. I do know that I was having trouble getting an answer on future availability from Specialty Wheels (where I have a wholesale account for my business) and finally went to WCCC where they were in stock to make sure I’d have them for B3Cat.

We get them from coker who bought spec wheel. They make them when they feel like it (been 2 yrs now on the 69-70), price has gone way up, service and quality down… Their site shows them available but you should call before you order online.

Who could provide a site or thread that details what is involved in restoring the chrome on an original set of Mercury Cougar Kelsey-Hayes S/S wheels?

There are rivets that attach the chromed center piece to the outer rim and I have often wondered what the best way to properly restore the rim.

Is it necessary to remove the rivets and separate the inner piece to outer rim to allow for chrome plating?

i bought them from coker tire in 15x7. i think its a good price and the quality is OK. i am not happy with the argent paint, they paint it directly over the chrome and it scratches off very easyly…

What exactly is the argent color? I have seen an almost black if not black on these wheels?
Thanks

Argent is a metallic silver as pictured on the wheels at the beginning of this thread. Many people choose to customize their wheels and paint the inserts a different color. In fact, dealers also color-matched the inserts for Cougars if your car was Jamaican Yellow, Onyx (black), Inverness Green, Cardinal Red, Cinnamon Frost and maybe another color.
