sunroof headliner

I’m starting to think about replacing the headliner in my sunroof car.

Unfortunately, the removable sunroof panel had the headliner removed from it before I got it.

Looking at the frame, there appears to be some sort of material attached to the center bow of the frame. See picture below.

It looks like the material is clamped around the center bow.

Can anyone tell me what the material was?
Do I need to replace it? If so, how is it installed and what type of material is it?

Thanks everyone!

Ok. After digging around online for a while, it appears that the headliner for the sunroof is supposed to have a seam across it with some material sewn to it like a headliner bow pocket.

My Scott Drake manufactured headliner does not include this.

Are there any manufacturers that make a correct headliner for a sunroof car?

Thanks for asking, I’m wondering the same.
This will be on my list of things to do.

I have paid a professional upholsterer to install the headliner in my 1970 Cougar Eliminator that has the original ASC sunroof. It looks great, but it appears that the headliner material that was attached to an original framework to support it on the underside of the sliding sunroof panel is somehow STUCK against the track and the sunroof panel will no longer slide backward at all!!! It really only slid backward correctly one time there at the upholsterer’s shop. For what I paid, it should have been perfect! :frowning:

Does anyone have a video of how a sunroof headliner should be installed in a classic Cougar?? If not, then can someone explain to me how that metal framework with the headliner material is to be installed on the underside of the sliding sunroof panel? Thank you for your assistance.

This might help a little.

National Parts Depot lists headliners for sunroof cars. The one for my G ran $167.

Wayne Hartwig, the bodyman that I take all of my cars to here in Waco, TX, came over to my shop to look at why the sunroof panel would not slide backward. He and I found that there were a few rough edges in the aluminum track that the headlining panel slides in. Those rough edges were enough to create a small rip in the headliner fabric that was wrapped over the top of the headlining panel framework, and that is what appeared to stop the whole thing from sliding in either direction. Once those rough edges were carefully smoothed out, we were able to reinsert the headlining panel back into that lower chanell and then hook the framework to the tabs on the bottom side front of the metal sunroof panel. The headlining panel now slides smoothly right along with the metal sunroof panel!! Wow, what a relief!!!

However, I do have one more question: The “HEADLINING PANEL REPLACEMENT” instructions mention step “2. Remove two screws securing headlining panel to roof panel at front corners.” I have never seen those screws and I do not know where they are supposed to screw into the corners of the headlining panel. Does anyone know about the screws and where they go? Thanks again!!

I belive you are talking about the two screws on the front of the inside sunroof panel.

Randy,
Thank you for the photo that shows the 2 screws. Do they screw into one of the metal tabs that hold the headlining panel at the front of the metal sunroof panel? I can’t imagine anything else there that the screws would go into, but I have not seen any holes on any of the metal tabs at the front of the metal sunroof panel,
