Although this is targeted to the 1st Gen Mustang’s, Anghel Restorations has a nice guide for parts / finishes for suspension parts which I assume are applicable for Cougars.

I’ll have to defer to the experts where it diverges for the exceptions. I’m primarily interested in the 1968 info.

Mustangs and Cougars generally have the same finishes on parts they share. Where it gets tricky is stuff that is not shared like any part of the rear suspension.
