I’m wanting to upgrade my front sway bar to a larger bar and add a rear sway bar for my 1968 Cougar. Anybody got some recommendations?
The wife’s 67 has a 9" & rear sway bar from a 70. The front bar is 15/16.
Don’t go to big on front you might need a rear bar for proper handling. 3/4 - 7/8
On my 69 XR 7 I upgraded the front bar from the standard for a 351W (5/8") car to a big block Mustang bar (15/16"), then added a Hellwig 3/4" bar to the rear. Polyurethane bushings from Energy Suspension all around. Made a big difference.
I have traction master’s (TMC Motorsports) on my '67. The are old school but are made for our cats. Metro auto parts market has their products.
Thanks guys! I am currently leaning to the Scott Drake 1" front bar C7ZZ-5482-A and either the Addco 995 3/4" rear or Addco 432 7/8" rear bar. I found the Addco 432 listed in the instructions on the Addco 995 which stated that the 432 bar was a direct replacement bar for the Cougar/Mustang. Did the Cougars have a factory option for a rear bar? If so where did it mount? Has anyone used any Addco products?
Not in 67
Have not used Addco sway bars on any of my cars
5/8" or 3/4" are the typical recommendations for rear sway bar diameter. Unless you’re planning a serious wheel & tire setup and additional complimentary suspension mods, the 7/8" bar is probably too much of a good thing.
The '70 Cougar was the first to offer a rear sway bar. It was 1/2" diameter. The factory method of connecting the swaybar to the rear axle is nothing like the Addco setup. (Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with Addco’s arrangement, but a direct replacement for factory it ain’t.)
Thanks cj750, the Addco 995 is definitely not a factory style sway bar , however they state the 432 is a larger factory type replacement. 7/8 is probably overkill. https://www.jegs.com/i/ADDCO/020/432/10002/-1
