The cardboard taillight protectors in the trunk of my 70 aren’t looking too good. Like everyone else’s, they’re bent, torn and punctured. To be expected, being that they’re…well…cardboard. All I can find online at WCCC, John’s and Ken’s is more of the same - repro cardboard ones. Has anyone ever found replacements that are a little more sturdy to keep my back lights from getting beat up? Maybe plastic or fiberglass or something? I just know if I by the paper ones, I’ll be buying ‘em again in a year.
I’ve had the reproduction covers installed in my car for 10 years and they still look great. As long as you don’t have a leaky trunk and are reasonably careful when packing things in your trunk, you should be fine.
I have repo cardboard ones in Ginger.(my hardtop) Thay are about 11 years old and look fine. I am unaware of anybody making them out of anythng harder, like ABS.
I made a set out of corflute and covered them with vinyl
That would be my idea. I actually want to finish off the trunk for a modern look. You could use the same stuff the package trays are made from and cover it in a material of choice.
Has anyone used the cardboard covers as a template to make some out of steel or aluminum sheet?
I think thats what I’ma do…or i should say have my engineer son fab, at his shop. I may be able to salvage the beat up ones I’ve got for a template.
69 Cougar I used to own had some that were made out of galvanized sheet metal.
Not straight forward because the top edge isn’t square and cardboard bends to allow for variation
Current work in progress to trim 69 trunk
Made this cover and bracket for coreflute backed covers - these will be covered in marine carpet and clip in with Ford Aus trim clips
Sorry for the bad shot - shows cover template in position - there is another bracket (in construction) that parallels the centre bracket so I don’t have to bend the ends of the covers to meet up with the taillight support
