Temp gauge and fuel gauge malfunction

Hello all. I have a 1979 Cougar XR7 that has two issues. Recently when running it both my fuel gauge and temp gauge simultaneously went passed the full and high range after about twenty minutes. The fuel tank was full and I know my cooling system is good. Any ideas why this is happening?

In addition, while running at night with my headlights on they turned off intermittently and when I depressed the foot high beam switch they turned intermittently and so did the high beams. Any assistance with these two issues would be greatly appreciated.

The dimmer switch?

Thanks Bill…. The dimmer switch is new. As I mentioned in the 2nd question my high low beam button might have an issue. Could that possibly be the cause of everything is on the same circuit?

Gauge problem is probably a separate issue from headlight problem. Look at the IVR (instrument voltage regulator) as most likely cause of pegged gauges.

It sounds like the circuit breaker in the headlight switch is tripping and resetting. Have you installed modern(Halogen) sealed beams?
