The Dog Thread

This is the newest member of our family. He was kind od a surprise brought on to me. We already have a deposit on another dog but my daughter and wife figured we need two dogs…hmmmmm I dont see the logic in there explanation to me but he’s here now. My little buddy!!! Three months old and 38lbs. Hes a Great Pyrenees. When we googled his personality…well hes the exact dog I didnt want! Figures, but he has me beat! Cant help but to love him

I gew up with two dogs that were basically cousins of yours: Hungarian Kuvasz. Same size and appearance with the long white fur, loved the outdoors, especially the snow, and a great overall demeanor. They were gentle around kids but somewhat aggressive if strangers came around. Made for great watch dogs.

This is the same as the previous owner said. He had a working farm with cows, sheep and goats. The parents of Apollo had a job and did it quit well according to the farmer. The parents were really friendly to my wife and I but he said around other dogs, fox and coyotes they were somewhat aggressive. He said to get him socialized with other dogs right away and there shouldnt be a problem. We had him out for a walk to the beach where there was other dogs and to my neighbors…he had a ball! So far, two thumbs up for Apollo!

I figure that anyone who can’t love an animal like that is broken inside somewhere. Congratulations on not being broken. :beerchug:

Anybody ever own a Vizsla? Trying to sway the wife to one of those, would love to get back into the bird hunting. Great looking dogs, IMO.

Speaking of getting back into hunting… there is a guy locally cross breeding Golden Retrievers and Irish Setters. REALLY like to see one at about 2/3 yrs. old.

This is Bosco. Just over 1 year old & right out of central casting for the gentle, loyal, family dog. No electric fence required, follows us around all day outside, inside, wherever.

He looks just like a li’l red X! He a pure bred? :poke:

Fixed it, thanks. :smooch:

Great looking Choco-Lab, Chris! Our choco, “Deli”(short for either Ghirardeli Chocolates, or, Delicatessan, since she looked like she’d eaten an entire stock of one when we got her) is like that as well…fat, dumb, n happy to hang with us wherever we are…

Thanks T3, gotta love the labradogs. It had been 10 years since my last dog (also a brown lab), and I had sort of forgotten how fun-loving they are. My cousin trains field champion labs, and he turned us on to this litter (his friend’s dog is the sire). We have not trained him to hunt, but he picked up the basic hand & voice commands super quick. This one is Bosco’s Chocolate Goodness, and he lives up to his name. The kids adore him, and he, them. He walks them down the driveway to catch the school bus, watches it go out of sight, then comes trottin’ back up to the house. After school it’s the same thing in reverse. Too funny.

Way cool. We had a German Shepherd that was like that when I was growing up…stray, showed up in our yard one day. Best dog EVER…“Bull” was his name…got hit by a car, found in the street on Easter morning…ahhh, the memories.

Our current choco, is a rescue dog, was “4 or 5” when we got her, 4 years ago. She’s getting up there, and is a strange duck. HATES being outside, unless we are out there, LOVES her kennel, it’s her “safe place”.

Dogs rule, cats drool…(except for Brother Bowls Ricky-Bobby…)

This is the newest to our tribe. Zeus. He’s a Beauceron. It’s a french sheep herding breed. 11 weeks old now. Hyper as hell but quit intelligent for his age. The white guy I mentioned in a previous post. He’s 4 months old now and not quite the same energy but they do get along well. The white fella, Apollo is patient…good thing for Zeus!!

Zues and Apollo…you’re bringing back my Magnum, P.I. memories! Cool dogs!

Haha, thats where I got the names! Alot of the younger guys at work dont pick up on it!
Thanks by the way!

Here’s my two: Rufus and Stella. They are both Akitas. Both rescues. They are both around 10 years old. We’ve had Rufus for abut 2 1/2 years and Stella for almost a year. They are both gentle and quiet and good with our cat. Both were probably a day or so away from being euthanized before being rescued by wonderful people that dedicate their lives to helping animals like these. If there is a particular breed of dog you are interested in, there is most likely a rescue group dedicated to that breed.

HACHI!!! Awesome.

O-K, I just have to post a couple more pictures. In the picture in my first post, Stella was still very skinny and her coat was thin. She was neglected pretty bad before being rescued. Here is a curent picture of Rufus and Stella. You can see how Stella’s coat and weight is better than the first picture. She is a happy dog now. Before, she would cower when you’d attempt to pet her. Now she likes the attention.

My wife loves to dress up our animals for the holidays. They don’t always look like they enjoy being decorated. But, they put up with it. With a couple of the pictures, I put together a Christmas card cartoon of Rufus from a few years ago.

-------- Sometimes it takes a little bit of “sweet” motivation to get Rufus to participate.

I thought it was pretty funny.
