It looks like it would connect with 2 separate wires at the ignition switch. This conflicts with the 4 wire square connector found at the firewall, and the connectors found in these 3 harneses.
The vac motor(s) has 2 wire connector, no single. Where does vacuum motor plug into the ign circuit so the car will not start until the wheel is pulled down /locked.
So, the question is how does the system plug into the harness? I see no connectors in the dash where all this is located. The plugs are on the engine side of the firewall and no hole or grommet to indicate that way of connecting. I have shown different harness and no actual way to discover the one that is correct.
Here are pictures of a system that I installed on a '69 recently. Note that the components and harness are different for '67, 68 and '69 - they will not interchange, only the actuator is the same from 1968 - 69 and even that changed from white plastic in '68 to black plastic in '69.
Royce is somewhat correct except that the 68 and 69 control “brackets” are different. The 68 bracket puts the components lower from the dash where the 69 bracket tucks things up out of the way. All of the components on the bracket are indeed the same.
1969 Vacuum motors are usually black with wiring…have never run into a white one except T-Birds and 1967. But these do not have the wiring hanging out of it. It appears that you have one white unit with wiring! Unusual but not impossible. You also look to have one or two 69 control units… How the components mount, is slightly different when it comes to the little vacuum solenoid.
FOR YOU, dig out a 1969 harness from your stash and send me the rest… smile: In 69 it is a “reduced” part by Ford to eliminate about 2lbs of copper… It is also by far the easiest tilt harness to work with! ( JUST installed this wiring in a 69 Mustang a couple of days ago.) The most difficult task is putting the hole in the door jamb for the activator switch.
If you don’t know what you have, ping me and send pictures and I can help. I’ll also see if I can’t dig out another 69 harness and post a proper pic. May have purple number tag on it with C9ZZ number… Perhaps check WCCC website for a picture as well? Don’s pretty good about this…
Yes the drawings are confusing…“artist’s rendering for conception”…at best.
Off of your ignition switch you should have a red/blue wire from the “S” (start) terminal that goes out a bit and has a male female connector on it. You unplug these and replug them into the vacuum motor connector if you want the interlock to be 100% correct. If you ever want to start your car with the column “tilted away” you can do this by simply NOT connecting this wiring up. Think about it… But that’s the story on that. Some cars may have received a couple of 3" extension wires to assist with this.
I made clear all the components in 1969 are different - components includes the bracket. Every year the stuff is different - none of the parts are the same. You can substitute the white plastic '68 actuator for the black plastic '69 - that was clear as well.
FastMerc, I agree about the harness. WCCC shows the basic wire harness in the middle of the pic. The car confirms this, along with a 69 complete tilt setup w/ harness I bought about a year ago. So three different sources for 69 harness tend to confirm the 69 style is the middle one. Now I’m sure that things changed on the assembly line as the mfg provided, The white vs black vac motor is probably an example. I have 3 68 & 2 69’s in the pic. 2 68 harness with lots of wires & the 4 plex connector.
The system I’m reinstalling works now, just got that last connector from the vac motor. Thanks for the tip. I did pull out 3 69 dash harness to refference…
The components you mention do actually interchange in their function and work well together! The vacuum solenoid is the one exception but can be remedied by swapping the orientation of the ports 180 degrees. A T-bird solenoid can be fitted by putting wire connectors on the wiring…adaptable!
My 68 has a 67 column, with a 68 control module (no vacuum motor) and a 69 wiring harness! Works fine.
The succession of the wiring harnesses from 67 to 69 represent “simplifying” changes made from year to year…with 69 being the best IMHO with the least amount of copper used. Functions exactly the same. In 69 the fuse holder went away and it plugged into the auxiliary plug from the fuse block. (Yellow 3 hole thing usually) Relay is the same with minor external difference in 67 part number IIRC. It really is a plug and play scenario.
I would not be surprised that’s a 67 piece. That and the 68 stuff is up for sale, but one goes with a restored column ! Anyway thanks so much for accurate insite of these elusive options!
I am in need of ALL parts to make my tilt wheel a tilt/away wheel. Let me know if you are interested in selling any of your left over parts. (Mines a 1969 Mustang )
Many thanks.
