Marti Report shows my 1969 Mustang was ordered with tilt tilt/away steering.
NONE of the tilt/away parts are present. My steering wheel DOES tilt.
Would like to get the tilt/away function back. Is it worth doing this?
Are ALL of the parts needed to convert back available?
I don’t even see the tilt/away locking pawel cable coming out of my steering column.
Any help/input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
The only parts that I’m aware of being reproduced are the vacuum can under the battery tray, wiring harness, door switch, and vacuum line. It’s a lot of work to get a tilt-away assembly working, and keep it working. You’ll likely want your column rebuilt by Tony Augustine as he’ll lubricate and check the cable needed to activate the tilt-away.
If your column tilts you have the tilt away column. Many were disabled as customers did not understand them. Detailed pictures will tell what you have.
I get no reply from Tony or WCCC.
I’m suppose to have a tilt tilt/away.
None of the parts for the tilt/away are present.
My steering column is just that, a column with a functioning tilt wheel.
I’m asking if ALL parts are available to ressurect the tilt/away function.
I don’t even see a hole by the door hinge for the tilt/away switch.
Thanks
As I mentioned earlier, almost none of the parts are reproduced. Used parts are out there and you can put a wanted ad and I’m sure you’ll get replies. But you’d need to buy them together or piecemeal, then restore them. Tony Augustine will test whatever you send him. He works during the week so he’s not always quick to respond in my experience.
Your car should have the extra hole in the door, unless it was covered up in a repaint.
Tony will sell you any parts that are missing. Photos of what you have would help a lot.
This is the column you have. Hoping the release cable is intact, as well as the wire cover. Your pictures will be key.
The wire cover is specific to the tilt away column.
Here are the rest of the components. The relay is the only portion that is reproduced although Vic has made the wiring harness.
The tilt - away bracket mounts all the components. It is only painted on a portion so that all the components are grounded electrically. This is before I bead blasted the bracket to remove the surface rust.
The bracket and wiring harness I posted pics of are from a 1968 version. You need the 1969 version which uses most of the same components with a different bracket and wiring harness. Tony will have most of the parts - you can decide if it is worth it or not.
For what it’s worth in your decision - I found the tilt-away function to be mildly annoying and disconnected mine. I’ve read that others have as well, including the car Don at WCCC is currently selling. I like the tilt, not so much the tilt-away.
Thanks for the input.
This is probably the way i’ll go as well.
Tilt wheel works great. Looks like the additioanl AWAY space gained is minimal.
Also, a LOT of STUFF is needed to get the steering wheel AWAY!
I would need it ALL. Nothing is there…so previous owner must have replaced the steering wheel.
Many thanks,
Chris
Plus… … you will not be able to start the car unless the steering column is ‘locked’, additionally, the car won’t start if the door is open.
I also had the ‘tilt only’ working when I had my 1969 XR7.

You say that you do NOT have an extra hole in the door jamb for the tilt??? So you have only one switch mounted there?
If you don’t, then your car didn’t have tilt!!! OR Some VERY ODD mistake was made on the assembly line. OR someone forged a Marti report? OR Kevin made a mistake?
ALSO:
Check for a hole(s) under the battery tray for vacuum can mounting. Two small, one large in the center.
Check the firewall above or near the accelerator cable for a vacuum line (or hole…) that would run from the line under the battery tray to the tilt mechanism under the dash…(with a one way valve spliced in…that also connects to the engine as the vacuum source.
You can still find the brackets for the components for sale online. 1969 is unique to that year. 68 could work…with some metal reshaping I think…
1969 wiring harnesses were repoped by Vic down in AZ. Door jamb switches are available new (Mustang 65 part) I sell relay replacements. Vacuum switches can be sourced from T-Birds of the day…67-69 and likely the aftermarket for something that would work.
Vacuum motor…see also T-Birds BUTT they will NOT HAVE the little micro switch in them for interupting the ignition circuit when you do not have the tilt away wheel pulled down into driving position. You can get by without this interlock…

(The other guy who has been rebuilding tilts since 1983ish…)
Where does the tilt away bracket attach to the dash.
Picture please.
Are all the components fit up under the dash between the heat duct and the back of the dashboard.
I have no clue how to attach the bracket.
