Looking for anyone that has experience running torq thrust wheels on a 68 cougar with 245/40/17 on the front and 275/40/17 on the rear. Any issues with clearance or rubbing anywhere? Thanks in advance. Stock car with no modifications
Any 40 series width will be a huge problem both front and rear of a 1968 Cougar. What works is listed here: List of Wheel&Tire Size Combos | Mercury Cougar Owners
I’m running 225/45R17 in the front and 245/45R17 in the rear. Front wheels are 7” wide and rears are 8”.
Front is lowered almost 2” and rear is at least 1”
Lower then stock
Zero problems with fitment with room to upsize a size or two. I chose these sizes to be safe on fitment as at the time my car was not at its final ride height or completely assembled. Next tires will be upsized
40 series isnt the width. The first number is the width
And not a word in there about backspacing.
The “40” is 40% of the width is the sidewall height.

Ya I don’t have the rims yet. I was only asking if anyone runs that tire size. I’ve been a mechanic for 25 years I know how tires and backspacing work hahaha. I guess a guy is better to not ask questions on here
In the link Royce posted there is backspacing posted behind the tire size. That’s a decent list but also doesn’t cover some of the larger sizes known to fit too
Sometimes we read too much into the response but generally everyone here wants to steer you the right direction.
I know there are few threads here talking about tire sizes that can be found through a search and the link Royce posted is a good start but like I said doesn’t cover some of the larger sizes. I dug around a lot before getting tires as well. Lots of measurements too before finally settling on what I have. I played it safe with mine and have a little room to go taller and wider down the road.
Oh and my back spacing is 4” in the front and 4.5 on the rear if that helps any
Ive been searching for over a year now looking for wheels for my cat. Ads rarely mention backspacing and barely list bolt pattern. This is the place to ask questions, without a doubt. You usually get more info than you ask for. Pretty accurate also
Every car varies a little bit. after 55 years of wear, tear, parts replacement, body work, the only way to know what fits on your car is to test fit on your car!
I ran 17x8 fronts with 4.75" BS and 17x9.5 rears with 5.75" BS. Tires were 245/45r17 and 285/40r17 front and rear respectively. The fronts require doing the shelby/arning control arm drop or in my case Global West Negative Roll upper control arms. This is so the upper ball joint clears the inside of the wheel. The rears I just rolled the fender lips for extra insurance.
