trailer hitch

My wife and I are planning on taking both out our Cougars to the outing in Oregon in the 1st week of August. We are going to be camping along the way. I hate to do it, but does anyone know where I could start looking for a receiver type hitch for my 67 cougar so I can tow a teardrop trailer?? Years ago I have a regular hitch on a cougar I bought, but the bumper had to have holes drilled in it. I do not want to drill holes in my bumper. Any idea’s would be great. We are really excited about taking both vehicle on a long run and show people not all cars are trailer queen’s, just trailer pullers- ha ha ha, get it, ha ha ha. ok that was dumb, but you have to admit it made you smile. again any help would be appreciated.

U-Haul comes up with one that is built to order, so there is a couple of weeks lead time on it:

I NEED TO SEE A PICTURE OF THE COMPLETED COUGAR RIG! THAT WILL BE TOO COOL!

AWESOME- Ty for the help

Wow! That would be a trip to remember! I have a NOS unit for light duty towing… Would sell it cheap just to help you make the trip, holes in bumpers are no big deal to fill. You would be the hit of the event!

I agree that he would be the hit of the event, especially if he drug the trailer behind him on the cruise. When is the event going to be this year, Don? Would like to get vacation scheduled for it.

Wow, This would be great if you could send me a picture. Expecially it is going to be used to come to your show. lordleadfoot@gmail.com

Don, posting a picture on here as well would be great, for future reference for those that may want to make one for themselves, if need be.

In 1981 when I moved from Fla. to Virginia I had a caravan. I needed everything hauling towing something. I ended towing a 16 foot ski boat with my 68 Cougar. Somewhere, someone in my family has a picture of the whole caravan. I wiil dig it up. Nice 68, two tone emerald green, white roof. One that I wish I never got rid of. Looooong story.

Now that would be a cool picture. I hope you can find a copy of it. The two tone color combo of green and white sounds nice.

Yes! I will have Joe post the NOS and used versions on our site and he will link them when they are done. I will also have Scott post the open house schedule ASAP.

Well here ya go Lord Leadfooticus Maximus! Here’s the NOS unit, which I gotta say is pretty nice for a tow hitch http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/store/p/13271-1967-1968-Mercury-Cougar-Tow-Trailer-Hitch-Assembly-NOS-.html,

and here is the used unit http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/store/p/13272-1967-1968-Mercury-Cougar-Tow-Trailer-Hitch-Assembly-Used.html. Looking forward to seeing your Cat with a trailer in tow!

Im not seeing any pictures in the links.

Joe got a little ahead of himself, Andrew will have quality pics up in a couple of hours.

Pics are up! Here’s the NOS kit:

Here’s a used one, all assembled:

And here’s a diagram (sorry it’s damaged / cut off…)

I have a new one in the box somewhere in my stash. Guess I didn’t realize the bar went all the way to the front of the gas tank and mounted.

I have a used on that has a cool provenance.

You could buy the hitch and a used bumper from Don. Then way you wouldn’t have to drill holes in your current nice bumper.

Expecting a 10% discount on my next order from WCCC on that suggestion… :poke:

I just took a hitch off the cougar. The holes in the bumper are at the very bottom and do not show unless you crawl under the car…just saying. The bigger issue in my mind are the holes you have to drill in the trunk.

Agreed… My take is if you are going to put an unsightly hitch on your car at least have the cool factor of it being original. If I were going to put one on I would buy used and rechrome it as the NOS has a grainy chrome finish from the factory.
