I really enjoy watching on youtube the 1st gen Cougars racing back in the day, they really got after it, and pushed those very capable cars to the limit.
I have been wondering how those Trans Am cars were set up for the series, does anyone have any information on what sort of chassis, suspension, and steering modifications in particular that they utilized for the track on those cars?
Well, Vic Yarberry would be the one to answer that question, hopefully he will chime in. Of course Bud Moore Engineering was the factory team for the 1967 Trans-Am Cougars. It is said he started by taking a look at how Shelby had prepared the Mustangs and then put his NASCAR magic in the mix. As for what he did, that changed throughout the season and from track to track. There is a great book by David Tom who restored/rebuilt/recreated one of the Bud Moore Cougars so the book has a detailed article on that car. Don’t know if is still in print but I’ve posted the cover below. More info can be gleaned from vintage articles on the race cars when they were competing.
If you haven’t already seen it, here is a cut-away illustration that was published in one of the major car mags at the time.
