trunk key question

So interesting dilemma. I don’t have a trunk latch key for my car. Years ago when I bought my 67 it was in pieces. The trunk lid was mounted to the hinges, but we held it shut with wire to bring it home. I got handed keys, but the only key I got that ended up working was an ignition key. Trunk/glove box keys, no go. So now fast forward years later finally getting to completing this drug out project and wanting to put the trunk latch in what to do. In talking to Don about this recently I asked him what to do and he said get me the key code off the glove box latch and we can make a key. Problem is I know the glove box latch is a 68 model as it has the rounded look to the button rather than the square-er corner, and the latch I did get was in an extra glove box door painted black, not the ivy like my interior is. So I asked Don what if I buy a used glove box latch from you (correct 67 looking one) with keys and just take it to a lock smith and have him change the trunk latch I have to match those. Don said sure. Also said if you get charged more that 20bucks or so your getting taken.
Well once I got the lock smith to understand what I was after he said 75 to 100bucks. Pick the trunk latch to get cylinder out modify the tumblers to match the glove box keys I got from Don. Far cry from 20 or so.
So yet another post from me asking if anyone has any suggestions or creative ideas on how to not spend 75 to 100 bucks on this?
Thanks in advance!
David

I believe there’s tutorials on YouTube on how to change the tumblers in the locks to fit your key.

Go on E Bay and Thomas J Sestak Autoparts has matching NOS Trunk and Glovebox lockset with keys for less than $100 including shipping. I had mismatched locks on my Cougar and got some stuff from his site to straighten out my keys-order came quick and parts fit fine.

Try West Coast Classic Cougars first. You can have your key cut by them. It will match your lock all you have to do is give them the code off of the door lock cylinder. See their lik here: https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/100022714.html?attribs=75

To me this is the way to go and it’s cost affective. The can do the same for the ignition key.

Did this lock smith know you can bring the locks them with out the car attached? Sounds like he thinks he has to pic the lock to get in. the tumblers can be changed with the lock out of the car with out the old key. No need to pic them.

S CODE , I didn’t have the door locks. I actually bought a repro set of door/ ignition from Don. He doesn’t currently have a repro trunk/glove box set.
BADCATT, He knows that. I took him the trunk lock by itself along with the keys I got from Don with the matching glove box latch. Not sure what you mean though that you don’t need the old key. From the videos I watched you need the original trunk key to insert so you can depress the little pin that holds the cylinder into the lock body. Then once you get the cylinder out you can change the tumblers. I would try that myself if I could get the little pin pushed in, but without the original key…sol?

buy this and just use the guts to fix what you have.

A good lock smith can insert a blank key, wiggle it around and read the tumblers and file a key to match the tumblers. Like Don said about $20 a key as it only takes about ten minutes if you know what your doing. There’re 250 different combinations to the trunk key. A local lock smith by me has all but a couple of the Ford masters. http://www.a-zkeyshop.com/
