Trunk light help

hello everyone .
i have a 68 cougar that i got a original trunk light wire .
does anyone know where it plugs in ?
has the male bullet connector .
under the deck lid between the deck lid henges .
factory wire harness has a bullet connector .
is that the wire that the trunk wire plugs into ?
Can post pictures if needed
i connected the trunk light to the ground on the battery ground and the bullet connector to the POS and the light comes on .
if i plug it into the harness bullet connector , the one that i thought was for the trunk light it dont come on .

How and what turns the trunk light on ?
thanks for any help on this issue .

When you tried to make the light work in the trunk did you have the light socket piece bolted to the decklid? I am pretty sure that the light gets its ground by being bolted in place. If all is properly in place the light is controlled by a mercury switch. When the decklid is closed the mercury switch will turn the light off, when the decklid is raised the mercury switch will turn the light on. If you just plugged the light wiring harness connector into the main harness and had the light socket laying on top of the gas tank you probably had no ground and the mercury switch would have the light turned off anyway.
