Trunk storage hack.

Finally got around to some more trunk area projects. Waiting on my 6 speed shifter but making good use of the time. While talking with a friend we figured out a way to get some hidden storage. In this day and age I’ll just carry a can of fix-a-flat and rely on towing insurance coverage for any wheel/tire issues. I will store some motor oil, basic tools and cleaning products in here. I recently replaced the 33yr (maybe 43yr) old Goodyear Wingfoots. Oddly enough the have some sentimental value as they generated a fair amount of conversation and speculation at car shows. So I find it neat that I have reused/repurposed one of them. The most bald one to boot!

I like it.

Very clever.

I took me a minute to figure out what you were doing with an old tire, but that is extremely clever! Wish I had thought of that!
One question: how are you going to affix it to the trunk floor?

Thanks (to all) and good question. I am considering a couple of holes and a hose clamp to cinch it down. I cut up an aluminum plate for more support as the wooden floor is only 1/8” mdf. But would like to figure out a snap in/quick release solution. It would be nice to used it as a beer cooler in a pinch.

Years ago I saw something similar. They got a round rubber tub at a feed store and cot the tire out so it dropped inside it. They made a lid out of a wheel cover and the part of the tire they cut off. They parked at shows with the trunk open and used it as the beer / pop cooler.

This everyday masterstroke solves my problem of carrying some limited but very dense tools for trips to the track…they can’t dent the trunk panels!

Groovy!

What a great idea. My spare tyre doesn’t match the wheels on the car anyway

BTW - Anyone got a pic of the storage compartments that Doc Anders built in his convertible?

Leon, Doc’s were more storage shelves and compartments that housed tool sets in blown plastic cases, oil, water, and what not. I don’t think I have a good picture, but I’m sure Neal does.

I am not aware of having one. But I still have some 15 roles of 36mm film I have never gotten processed. And funny thing I was just looking at them last week and am making plans to do so.

I’m not one for taking many pictures, but I’ll see if I can find anything in my stuff.
