Under Cowl and wiper arm assy

Ok guys, my wiper motor went out, so the cowl and under cowl parts are out for cleanup.

The car has been repainted the original color, but the cowl was painted in place so there is a ton of overspray thru the grill vents.

The questions, is the wiper trans assy supposed to be black?

Or natural metal. The plastic cover for the wiper motor?

I assume the wiper posts are supposed to be natural, but would like confirmation

P.S. current under cowl state.

Wiper arms and posts - natural. Motor cover - black plastic. Under the cowl should be body color.

Thank you, now to clean everything and remove the overspray. Ill need more laquer thinner…

sfhess. on most of my cars that I have had the area under the cowl was the Black as the engine compartment.

Ill have to side with sfhess, Im replacing the foam blocks under thel cowl and its body color under them.

The yellow showing on the cowl here is from a repaint. It does have Yellow under the Black. If your car is Body under the Cowl then by all means keep it that way. Maybe more, or early69s were painted body color up to the time the upper Cowl under the hood got done that way. I’ll keep my eye out for unmolested examples of early 69s.

When they started painting the engine compartment black over the cowl is a time and assembly plant thing. San Jose started earlier in production Dearborn later. Before that the base of the windshield opening was blacked out and no engine compartment black extended above the firewall to cowl pinch weld.

Dearborn related discussion on the subject. Need to revisit this subject and post the approximate change over date for that plant. CMF thread on the subject first started in the Boss 429 section

San Jose CFM discussion on some topic and like the other I need to post the survey results

Mine was originally body color above the pinch weld. I painted it satin black when I had the cowl panel off for repainting.

Cleaning up the under cowl while waiting for the motor from WCCC.

Before

After

I have a bottle of touch up color. So i chipped out and sanded the overspray off, removed the foam blocks (ordered new), and brush painted the top and lower boxes. Flat blacked the wiper motor mount and plastic cover and my friend laquer thinner cleaned up the wiper linkages and posts.

Wiper motor arrived. Boy is it nasty, spent an hour cleaning it. So a question, is all this GREASE leakage from the gear box? Do i need to open it up and repack it?

The onei took out is no where near as nasty as the tested one from WCCC.

April build 69 XR-7. Body color inside the cowl.

You can also see where they placed the window adjustment plates for the doors when they painted them.

I had those same paint shadows. My engine compartment black comes up higher though.

I noticed I haven’t put in the data…
My Cougar was built at the Dearborn, MI Plant with a Scheduled build date of Jan 13, 1969 (for Mr Speegle)

I don’t have the foam blocks on mine.
