Could anyone post a photo of their underhood paint ok decals on their 1968 Dearborn built Cougar? Thanks
Since these were made from paper and not coated with a clear top layer like most other engine compartment decals/stickers they don’t hold up well to the weather and age. Only have two examples that you can make out. A couple of comments to at least aim you in the correct direction
1- Make or purchase the inspection/check stickers with the squared off corners not the rounded ones.
2- Inspector names and numbers were printed on each sticker not punched through like we see on 69 examples at that plant sometimes.
3- There are examples where the paint inspector used a stamp rather than the typical P sticker. My belief is that its an inspector that was doing that job back in 64-65 period and he used it when he filled in for that position when needed from is (1967-69) assignment. It appears that there may have been two of these older paint inspectors (one more than the other so far) and one of the electrical inspectors that have been found so far.
This is getting confusing to me. Most vendors that sell these list the application as beginning in 1969. Also, as you state, some have the rounded rather than square corners. My all original 68 has two of the originals remaining: the letter B to the right and the letter T to the left on the drivers side of the cowl. Also the T has a small number 2 in the lower right corner, which I assume was the inspector number. but not visible on the B decal. There also appears to be the remnants of another on the passenger side at the end of the weatherstrip across the cowl. I assume that I am missing the letters F and P but have no idea of their original location. Also, some vendors also list an additional letter P decal in red.
Great so your part way there
Unfortunately I believe your describing the 2 that is printed like the larger letter and its not the inspector identification but a variation of the T sticker likely trim, inspection sticker
Yes it can be difficult since we haven’t discovered the decoder info for these or how they were different between years or were between different production time periods or even shifts/inspectors
I hesitate offering info from other years because of this fact/possibility
Only nice and clear example is the square sticker with a black print double “W” or “WW” below and to the inside of where the windshield washer hose attaches to the adapter on the cowl for lack of a better term. This was found on a late April built Dearborn car. Same sticker design has been documented on a very, very early 69 Dearborn example on the drivers side center of the cowl also.
Other places (if your car has not been restored ) is the drivers side door jamb at A pillar and inside surface of the trunk lid. The door jamb was used in 69 production while the trunk lid inner surface in 67 at Dearborn
Just a possibility - sorry I don’t have more on your specific plant and year at this moment
If you want to print your own, the font Franklin Gothic Demi Cond in 80 pt in Word is very close to the dearborn style stickers.
FWIW, the late Tom Lawrance of KTL fame suggested (and I followed the advice) purchasing the repro’s with the rounded corners and cut them into squares (doing away with the rounded corners). Think that is what KTL does with their restorations. Not sure how the size works out compared to the originals but sure looks a lot more original.
Here are a couple of photos of the under hood decals on our Lime Frost XR7G. The one in the center of the the cowl area looks like a W the other is hard to read.
Steven
I have a 68 that has white, Paint OK stampings , not decals, on the underside edge of hood , and on the fender aprons.
Who’s (number) the inspector? Guessing 603
628 is the number , on the inner fender edge where it bolts in.
Can get a picture if needed.
Would be great to add to the collection - will need all but the last three digits of the VIN to label and sort the info. Can post or send it to my email - what ever works for you.
Thanks
