"Upgrading" '68 Headlight Switch

Since I’ve replaced my vacuum system w/the electric motors for the headlight covers, can I:

Use a '69 Mustang switch OR a '69 / '70 Cougar switch to light the park lights AND headlights at the same time?

I know that '69 is the only year I could use from a Mustang, because of the 4 light setup.

I understand the spacer would have to be switched out.

Thanks in advance…Steve

Nice color, and welcome aboard.

Steve I’m not sure about the switch. I’d believe that you should be able to use the factory switch. It might require a just a jumper wire but I’m not sure as I’ve never done it. Here is a diagram for doing the same thing on a 65-66 Mustang.

That is a bitching color, car too

I’m new to Cougars as well so I can’t comment on the switch, but just wanted to say “What a beautiful car!”

It think this is a little more complex than you might be thinking. The headlight switch has a built in 15 amp circuit breaker. This is just barely adequate with 4 stock headlights. When you add the additional current required by the parking lights you may exceed the current limit. Probably the best course of action would be to use a relay to power the headlights and then use a diode to power the parking lights when the headlights are switched on. I believe you will find the switches are the same and the difference is the wiring harness.

Use the 67 switch, identical to 68 but w/o the extra cost of the vacuum ports.

What size diode and when upgrading to LED headlights does it cut out your directionals parking lights

The diode would probably need to handle at least 5 amps so maybe get a 10 amp to be sure. I don’t understand the LED question.

I took my steering column out and painted it I remove the turn signal switch by removing the pins out of the plug when I put everything back together the LED headlights work but no directionals in front

I was just wondering if plugging the headlights into the new LED bulbs shorted out the directionals or if the power for the directional bulbs under the bumper came from the headlight plugs and by switching to LEDs I canceled out the power to the directionals somehow

Electrically there is no connection between the headlamps and the turn signals. You must have some wires swapped someplace, or not connected at all.

Are your directional bulbs LEDs? Some LEDs are polarized so they won’t work if they are inserted 180* out.
