Value of a 1968 XR7 G 302 Cougar?

Hello, I’ve been looking and it’s hard to find examples of a 1968 XR7 G 302 powered Cougar value. Car is in fair shape. Trying to find current sales. Thanks

The XR7-G Cougar was 1968 only.

I am the current XR7-G Registrar. If you are buying a Cougar that is being represented as a G private message me the VIN and I will see what information I have.

As Phillip mentioned there are a lot of things wrong in your message. Mercury did not offer a 302 in 1967 so that is suspect too.

It’s a 68.

Lots of people get the Dan Gurney Special package that was available in 1967 confused with the XR7G that it is a common thing to see them conflated with each other.

Given that the 302 isn’t as coveted as the 390 and 428 cars so there is some value difference, but as drivers go the 302 J code is one of the nicest cars. The 2V was also a great cruiser. I think the complete option list and condition is going to make a very big difference regardless.

OK that means your initial post was a lie. Post the VIN and let’s be serious.

Anyone have any info of recent sales similar to what I described? I don’t have info of what options the car has yet.

Hey there dozz302 -

As I said earlier in this thread, I am the XR7-G Registrar and have access to Ford’s records plus I track sales as best I can.

It is very very difficult to answer your question with the limited info you are providing.

I do have some info on recent sales, but those are private transactions that I am not at liberty to discuss.

If you can tell us if the car you are looking at is a genuine XR7-G, what options it has and an accurate assessment of it’s condition we could give you ball park figures on value.

If you want, you can also use Hagerty’s Value Tool but most G sales are not public.

Come on Royce, his original post was more likely a typo not a lie. Please think before posting a inflammatory comment. and yes posting the VIN will help when he has it. It also appears he is looking to buy not sell

To be more precise - they did not make many Gs so sales are only occasionally and almost always private. Very few Gs have sold at auction and to my knowledge a loaded, concourse correct XR7-G is yet to sell at one of the high visibility auctions like Barrett or Mecum.

So using the info you have; a 302 G in fair condition I’m not able to give you a comp sale based on that. A J code 302 4v XR7-G with a sunroof, air, cruise, am/fm will be worth way more than a non-sunroof F code 302 2v G without any of those other options.

A quick search on Hagarty nets this -

This one for sale in the car corral at the Carlisle Ford Nationals last weekend.

An S code, 4 speed, non-sunroof with a locking rear. Seller was asking 85K

Thanks, I did see that at the show, Car is part of a 5% or less of most highly desirability and condition. Color combination, original condition, power train, options, and just a beautiful car. Thanks again for sharing.

Thank you for sharing the Hagerty Values also.

Did you come by our tent on the show field? Or better yet were you at our club barbecue at the host hotel?

Perhaps we met!?

got any engine compartment pictures?

I am going to see the car in the near future. It’s in a garage and has some rust. No pictures.

This is a photo I took of the engine compartment when the car was at Carlisle in 2022. It had a homemade ram-air system. Don’t know if anything has been done to it since then.
