[Video] Dash Surgery on a '68 Standard Cougar - Clock & Speaker Installation

Hello! I’m back with another video, follow-up to the last one I did about upgrading my stereo. In that one I discovered my dash speaker was blown, which was disappointing. I didn’t look forward to taking my restored dash apart, but I had one other decent reason to do so: a nice quartz-converted clock that was generously gifted to me by forum member Rich @Sixty-EightCougar .

Back when I was putting the gauges together during the restoration, I had tried to install a clock and had a weird issue where it would work on the bench but not in the cluster. This time around I figured out the unexpexted reason why.

In the end I was able to get both items replaced and working, and while it’s a fiddly job, it’s pretty satisfying to have a working clock and a great-sounding stereo that’s completely stealthy.

Anyway, maybe this video will be helpful for folks unfamiliar with how the base model / standard Cougar dash fits together, specifically the 1968 version. Enjoy!

Great video, thanks for doing all that work and sharing.

Are you aware that you’re channeling Joe Pera fixing up a Cougar? It’s uncanny.

It won’t be long until the reproduction dash bases are available. According to UPS tracking the second round of solid models is to arrive before 9PM tonight. There were 24 pages of modifications between the first and second round so there is a lot to evaluate in the validation process.

I had to look up who that is. I can see a slight resemblance. Will have to watch some of his comedy.

That’s exciting! I might have to get another Cougar just so I can test some of the new stuff coming out. Or might be worth having a backup set of bezels for when the old ones spontaneously crack in half. I hear there may be some new clips coming for the face pad as well? Is there any chance of new face pads happening?

Of course the dash base has to come first but then the pad makes a natural addition. My thinking is that the biggest challenge is the length. It becomes very difficult to ship. But if it were injection molded with a very tight interlocking seam it might be feasible. Not sure about color. Might make more sense to paint them.
