vin number stamping

My question concerns the vin# stamping on the driver’s side fender apron on 1968 Cougars. On my unrestored 19K original mile car,the number is not visible at the notch in the fender lip. The data plate on the door, the buck tag, as well as the metal plate between the windshield and the dash pad are all present and correct. Could the number have been stamped farther back on the apron so as not to be visible with the fender installed? I don’t think that I will risk messing anything up by attempting to pull the fender back, but am just curious if anyone else has a car with a similar situation. Thanks

This topic has come up before and like you my vin is not visible on the apron but it is indeed under the fender. You might be able to make it out by viewing it from the wheel well. I loosened the fender bolts and with a bright LED flashlight could make out the stamped vin just under the fender on mine. Now I don’t know if all are like mine as the 68’s were produced in two separate factories.

Same here.

Your VIN number is there. Please do not loosen the fender at a risk of messing up the factory caulk on a 19K mile car!

Guess its likely a Dearborn built 68.

Yes it’s a Dearborn build. Was this typical on some of the Dearborn built cars in 1968? I previously owned a 1968 1/2 Cobra Jet Mustang that was a Dearborn build and the engine code R was missing from the vin # stamping on the fender apron.

This is absolutely normal.

Royce is the R stamped in your fender apron? If not I wonder why? Assembly line differences, maybe? On my 1968 J code I have a double stamp on the fender apron, single stamp on the right side.
