I want to purchase one front and one rear autolite shock for my 68 cougar. They do not have to be useable. They do have to have good stampings in the metal! Nothing else really matters at this point. perferably C7WY 18124A and CaWy 18125 A Harvey
Royce Peterson has had good luck in the past getting these on ebay. He may have some that are usable. Also, there is a chance that Don might have some on a car at WCCC. They don’t usually salvage used shocks, but I bet they would pull them if they have some… Just a few ideas.
“CaWY”??
Yeah somebody gave me that number CAWY, never heard of it but there is much I don’t know about old part numbers. I have searched and googled that number and found nothing. I am pretty sure front and back were both C7WY. Wish I could figure out what the different end letters ment. I believe from factory all cats got C7WY18124A front and C7WY18125A for the rears. But Jussplumb cougars has some C7WY 18125 C’s and D’s? The D’s are the wrong color as they are gold. The C’s I don’t know. Then I hear that the part number C7WY 18124A will not be the actual numbers stamped into the shock. So without a box that they come in what would the numbers on the shock be? I think I am going to call WCCC and see if they have any low mileage wrecks that might have autolite shocks on them that I might get off ofem. Keeping my eyes on e-bay also.
We had a pair from that 1968 XR7 that Don bought for his wife a year and a half ago. Looked for them today, couldn’t find them.
If I remember correctly, they were black.
Scott thanks for looking, I heard you were the numbers gurue out there? any insight on the difference between a C7WY 18125 A and a 18125C? Of Yall do run across a couple of original autolites off a low mileage cougar let me know. They don’t need to be serviceable. I really want to try and take the impressions off of them. Sand blast them clean and then try and transfer the stampings onto something else.
I know there’s more detailed info out there, but here’s a primer:
Understanding Ford Part Numbers
And, more from Ford truck site
Mr. Eos thank you. Seems weird to find that I read all three and remained interested. In how to decipher a part number? What am I turning into?
LOL, ClassyC… it is a disease. Have you seen the AMK Guide to Ford Fasteners? Adds a whole 'nother dimension to Cougar-OCD syndrome…
Nope haven’t looked at that yet. Ordered some stuff from them. Some of it appears correct some not. Had to re-use a lot of original pieces so far. Like the u-bolts for the rear axle. The ones they sent were round on top instead of flat. A few other bolts didn’t have the correct markings. I have found some weird stuff to though. One piece on one side of the car has one type nut and the same piece on the other side has something different. I know they are original pieces and am sure it was whatever was in the bin the guy on the line was working out of. They didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to some of the stuff huh?
You’re right. We pay far more attention to the details than was ever paid originally. These cars were being pushed through production as quickly as possible. Any available part in the nearest bin could have been used.
These anomolies make judging rules difficult to define which is why the standard is set based on what should have happened and any deviation from that standard would require documentation to avoid loosing points in a Concours event.
Ok well taking that into consideration, should I alter from original at times? Right now specifically if found that the factory tie downs, one side had a collar on the nuts and the other side did not? Should I look for nuts with collars which I believe would be correct verses the others? I know it sounds little but?
Good question. I seriously doubt that the nuts on your tie downs would be examined closely enough for someone to notice the difference from side to side. I can’t imagine there was a different spec for the left and right sides. Here’s a pic of the correct tie down nuts. I would find four of the correct nuts and use those.
Apparently I haven’t figured out how to add a picture to my post. If you want a pic of the correct nuts, send me your email address and I’ll send it to you.
Anyone have any 1970 Autolite Cougar shocks? Need both front and rears, for my 1970 428CJ convertible. Want to go as factory correct as possible. Would these shocks have a D0WY part # on them? thanks - Scott
He must mean C8WY 18125-A.
