WCCC Photo Contest 2016!

+1 I learned a great deal about getting a white car to show up correctly in a photo especially in the sunshine. I too had a great time doing this. I had been putting many, many hours in at work to make sure I did not wreak a vacation last week. So at times the weather was good and I would run home grab the camera, grab the Cougar and go spend an hour or so shooting Pole Cat. Very nice break from working my a$$ off.

Thanks for the opportunity Andrew.

Lots of great pics! Must have been hard to narrow it down to the finalists!

Now that the 2017 Calendar is finished, it’s time to let the cat out of the bag. The three winners are:

Brian Pierce, from Australia. 1969 standard convertible, 1 of 33. Photos by Mark Bean.

Lori Risley, 1973 XR-7. She restored the car herself and shot her own photos as well.

Laura Serrano, 1969 XR-7. Photos by Grant Cox

How it was decided

This was tough. I got a lot of great entries from all over the world. Choosing the winners became a somewhat subjective process, but I’ll try to explain my reasoning here:

The Whole Package - as many of you may know, the calendar layout I’ve been doing for the last couple years includes a large main picture, and 1-2 smaller pictures below, with either another angle of the car, or an interior shot, or an engine shot. Many of the entries I got included a small number of nice exterior shots, but nothing more. This wasn’t enough to build a full “spread.” I didn’t make this clear in the original guidelines, so I apologize for not stating that expectation - will do so next time.

The Story - People who included useful information or an interesting story about their car got my attention more than those who only sent pictures.

Photo Quality & “Fitting In” - Perhaps the most obvious factor is, the photos had to be very good quality to make the cut. Not only that, but I looked for shots that would fit in with the overall theme / “feel” of the rest of the calendar. Some of that also included which months / seasons needed to be filled in - I always try to make the pictures match the month they’re in. That last factor was an unknown initially, so a bit of random chance there.

I think that sums it up. I’m super thankful for all the effort and enthusiasm that you guys put in to this, and I’m hanging on to your shots for potential future use. I put together a page in the calendar for “Honorable Mentions” which I’ll give a preview of below.

Honorable Mentions - this doesn’t even do justice to all the great entries I got, but it’s a start.

How about next year consider cars in a state of restoration ? This could help boost moral for us guys trying to get our cars together.

Joe

I hear you. But the bottom line is it probably wouldn’t sell.

What he said - in-progress pics are fun to see in the right context (like a forum), but on a calendar most people want to see cars in their complete, shiny, beautiful, idealized form. Kinda like human models, you’d rather see them in their idealized form than, say, bushing their teeth in the morning with bloodshot eyes and bedhead.

Unless of course they look like these cars… I would buy one!

Hay Don, Here is one for that Hemmings calendar.

Hemmings has been doing that calendar for years. They always get some good shots,
