What are my XR7-G Raydot mirror options?

The original mirror for my XR7G has got some issues. The remote side of it is missing some Raydot specific bits and the chrome needs to be redone or replaced. The housing and the mirror itself are in great shape. Here’s my options:

  1. repair the remote somehow and redo the chrome.
  2. repair the remote somehow and replace the chrome with a repo piece from WCCC ($230).
  3. buy a complete repo mirror from WCCC ($500).
  4. buy a used one from WCCC ($1000) and still redo the chrome.
  5. keep hunting for parts to fix it with.

What do you guys think?

The chrome rim on mine was hit by a sander so I thought I’d replace it but when I took the whole mirror apart and saw how it was put together, I put it back together and figured I’d save that job for another day (or owner!). For comparison, here are some detailed pics I took of mine while it was apart.

thanks for the pictures.

So I think my first step is to locate a 68 remote mirror and take it apart to figure out how to dismantle mine without breaking the pot metal when removing the cables. In the past I would use a small torch to heat up bent pot metal to straighten it. So I am thinking that it might work for the mirror.

Would it be possible to purchase a reproduction 67-68 Mustang remote mirror to dismantle for the remote cable?

Wasn’t the cable, wand, etc., available as a reproduction from WCCC in the past? I seem to remember getting that to fix the remote on a side mirror on a G I had in the past.
The other option might be to find a used mirror from a regular 68 Cougar with a good remote cable system to transplant to your G mirror. There are many more options to fix and replace a mirror on a G than when I was first trying to find the missing G parts on my first G. Some of them I had to get reproduced for myself and others (WCCC has got them all on their website now).
Good luck with it.

WCCC doesn’t offer the remote wand side of the cable anymore.

I just bought a 68 remote mirror of flea-bay. Once it comes in and I get it apart I will move on to restoring my G-mirror. definitely prefer fixing original parts.

I will post an updated once it’s all done.

There was a thread on the SAAC forum years ago about this subject. I tried to find it but it couldn’t.

The gist was being patient, prying things apart and pinching them back together plus having an extra for parts.

The thing that seemed the trickiest to me was where the cables go through the G chromed rim. Originals were marked for which cables went where, my repro is not. That’s easy enough to keep track of but freeing the cables from that rim then securing them back again in a repro or rechromed original seemed daunting.
