What do you think?

May consider buying this car.

So it’s a “survivor” that from his description sounds like it has had every piece of every system totally rebuilt front to back?

That is a 1967 Cougar.

I would start by requesting the vin number and door data plate info and run the numbers. Doesn’t look to bad at all, see what he will do on the price. Never hurts to ask.

He emailed me and reduced the asking price to $10,000. I don’t think he knows what it’s worth.

Oh, maybe he does know…the car kinda looks like a pig with lipstick!

Had to throw in an edit, 'cuz that was too brutal: Advertised as a '68 but obviously a '67. The ‘numbers matching’ statement doesn’t really equate to what’s under the hood (weird air cleaner/snorkel, dual-diaphram distributor). What’s up with the 427 sticker on the air cleaner lid?
“And it’s very original. Even the floormats are original. Also, check out the rims! They’re Cobra GT-350s!”
Yeah, nothing says ‘original’ more than putting Cobra GT-350s on a Cougar…

I like the 427 air cleaner lid.

The photobucket pics really show more rust than I was expecting from the description.

Make sure the headlight doors work. He says no vacuum problems, maybe that’s with the door vac disconnected.

Looks like at least the driver seat needs reupholstering of some sort.

The AC is non-functional. The blinkers don’t work.

I don’t know how to tell the difference between a 390 and a 427 by sight, only really know the look of the 302 and 351 well. If that actually is a 427 and the fender badge is just wrong, that’s kinda interesting.

If its really a 390, I am leery of the air cleaner lid saying 427. It means either he was trying to trick folks into thinking he had a bigger engine than he does (which is funny with the fender badges saying otherwise), or he just didn’t care about it being right. Neither of those sound so great to me.

It does look nice. If I was buying based just on the ad, I personally wouldn’t think it’s worth more than maybe $7000. If the pics showed 0 rust, I’d deal with all the other issues a little easier. As it is presented, it seems like a lot of work for a '67 standard AT 390. And the type of work (rust/body and upholstery) isn’t the type I’d want to have to get into out of the gate.

He is representing that he rebuilt all this stuff, nearly everything, and he doesn’t even know what year it is?

Great looking wheels though!

Lmao dd. you edited your post while I was writing some of the same stuff.

I did like the pig with lipstick comment, though, yeah, it’s not really that bad.

it’s always best to look at it in person first, but I think he took in down to a price that is reasonable. I would say from the photobucket pictures it is a #3 condition which puts it at $6750 and then add 30% for the 390 drivetrain raises the value to $8775. Then you have to look at options color combo etc… I would say $9,000 would be a good buy, if no other rust issues are being hidden.

I wouldn’t under estimate the severity of the rust around the window. That’s not really an easy fix and I would bet being that advanced there are a lot more issues with the car. Not to mention all the BS in the ad. I have to question how you can own a car and have all that work done without even knowing what year it is.

Amen. :silent:

I have to agree with you on not knowing the year thing Al. I say the small details can be deal breakers. Is it jus someone being dishonest to make a buck? I would hope not, uneducated more likely is the answer. I say if you are going to sell or buy a classic, Cougar or otherwise do your homework first.

LOL tmh! After looking through the pics again (and doing some quick research), realized I was completely wrong on the air cleaner housing, it looks correct (except for the new-looking repro 427 sticker that someone stuck on). Strange that the PS valve cover doesn’t match the chrome DS. Also strange is his comment that “but I don’t have an ac unit, the heat works great”, I see a condenser/compressor/freon lines, is the evaporator missing?
The bump in the center of the dash pad makes me think it’s a reproduction, and the plastic chrome on the dash looks really nice, rechromed maybe? Same with the carpet, just looks too nice to be original.
Obviously not original paint since the pinstriping isn’t visible. In-line fuel filter near the gas tank would suggest the tank is rusted or contaminated. Shock tower brace on the PS looks like it’s only held with a single bolt/nut (maybe just a bad pic?) Could very well have been originally registered with the CA DMV as a 68 model, even with a VIN starting with a 7 (that’s how mine was).
Now that I’ve convinced myself it’s not so bad, there’s those pesky little rust issues…

This car has some issues but I have seen worse. The blue G comes to mind that just sold on eBay last month. Anything can be fixed and for the most part this cars issues seem small (from the pictures). With all things considered for the right price this would make a nice car, heck its a big block cat  .

Sellers like this are usually the ones your going to get the best deals from. The buyer has to know what your looking at and be more educated then the seller to buy cars like this. Educated Cougar owners/sellers like the majority of us here are going to advertise it correctly with details and know its value. None of us are going to walk into Bill’s garage and buy a G car 30% under market value. But, a seller with a Craig’s list ad wrong year and has it as an xr7 and no details and it really is a G Cougar will take 30% under market value and be happy with the sale.
