Im due for an oil change and want to make sure I’m putting in the right stuff. Plus I’m curious to see what everyone else is running. I searched around and seems that it’s always mixed opinions on what’s best for classic car engines. I couldn’t find any thread on this already (on this site at least, and I don’t want to log into the other site).
But anyway,
I trust the opinions of cougar owners on this site over any other so any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Couldn’t tell you if it’s the best, right, or otherwise, but I’m running Royal Purple in all areas…motor, trans, and axle. Seems to be fine.
I use Walmart’s “finest” , Super Tech in 20W-50 with a bottle of ZDDPlus in each oil change. I have thought about perhaps going to 10W-40 as my oil pressure is plenty high (if you beleieve the factory XR7 gauge). My logic on the oil is that it is made by one of the majors and meets all pertinent specs. That and I change it regularly. I have read up on full synthetic recently but am too cheap to buy the stuff and I go with what I know and has always worked for me. I use Pure One filters.
I’ve read that Synthetics can be too thin for classic motors. But I’ve also read that its the best to use in classic motors. I’ve also read to only use oil with no added addictives or what ever. Then again I’ve read to only use oils with zinc addictives. Then I said **ck it and started this thread. LOL!
My oild pressure reads right under 100. but I can’t remember what I put in it last. I want to get the right stuff and remember it this time ha.
thanks!
I use Shell Rotella 10-40. I am with Bob on this one. Use a major brand and change it on a regular basis. I have not had any issues. In my truck I use Valvoline at the oil lube shop. I like just pulling in and have them change it.

Gonna do my first oil change on my Cougar before she leaves the garage again. Stuff that’s in there (what she came with) is way past due to be changed.
On the recommendation of the guy at the CarQuest near my apartment, I bought 20w50. He said since I’m not driving in winter, it’s the way to go. I asked about synthetics and he said he doesn’t like em. So I didn’t go synthetic.
This oil has been purchased but not yet put in. Probably in the next few weeks it will though. And then I’ll be able to say if I like it or not.
I use Valvoline 20W50 racing oil in my cat.
I decided to just call the guy who built my motor. He’s a good guy I can trust. He recommended schaeffer 20 50 synthetic blend. Going to try it out.
If you are running a flat tappet cam be sure to choose an oil with Zinc to protect it from wear.
What brand is not as important as having clean oil. In my D. D. I use whatever is on sale (X@3000 miles). In the racer where the oil temp in July-August approaches 260 degrees I use Royal Purple synthetic. Mineral based oil breaks down at those temps.
Yep, that’s what I use too. It is what Jasper recommended when I had them do my block and heads.
I use Mobil 1 15w50.
I’m using just plain old 10W-30 and change it every fall before storing for the winter. Last year’s oil had a whopping 400 miles on it!
Reading the latest Street Rodder today, there was an ad for Comp Cams Muscle Car and Street Rod oil.
