What option determines if you got center dash dummy lights?

Since I have the dash out of my '70 standard I noticed mine has the 4 square hole dummy lights on the front / center of the dash. When I looked at the back I noticed it had holes for bulbs thats when I noiced they we’re (Low Fuel, Park, Door Ajar, something else) dummy / indicator lights. My car does not have a harness or bulbs anywhere near it and the parking brake light indicator is in the cluster.

Since I have three dashes at the house right now, they all have the same dummy lights in the center. One or two may have had the far right one blocked. I was just wondering if standard cars actually came with these lights working, was is a different option? or an XR7 thing? I thought the XR7’s had rocker switches there.

I still need schooled on some of these options. Any help appreciated as I am cleaning up the dash now, prepping it, putting in new center dash speaker etc…

EDIT: Also, I would like to put in a factory passenger map light. Before I order one from WCCC, in my factory harness is there a spot to plug it in? or would it need splicing.

You are correct about the XR7 having rocker switches in that panel. All of the warning lights with my XR7 are in the cluster and there is no additional warning light display. But my '69 XR does not have the low fuel relay or door ajar option and I’m thinking that the optioned out standard had more bells and whistles than an XR7. Here’s a good question; since the XR7’s map light was controlled by a rocker switch…what controlled the map light option in a standard…was there a switch on its light cover???..HUMM. Oh,…while I’m speculating and creating more questions than answers…here is a possible completely useless piece of information. On '67-8 models, the courtesy lights are powered by black wires with blue stripes…and the well is dry!

The courtesy light group added the map, trunk and engine compartment lights to a standard Cougar, and yes it had a switch at the map light.

The visual check panel option added the low fuel light and the door ajar lights to the center panel on a standard Cougar.

Hmm…Visual panel option…thanks Dave. So a standard has a parking light on the cluster, would it light in both spots if you had the visual check panel option as well? Its kinda odd ford basically gave all standard cougars the panel, without the wiring and bulbs, instead of putting in a cheaper blank dummy panel (like they did with the map light). On all my inserts if you shine a light through the back you can see the lables.

If one we’re to make the visual panel functional (big IF) what other components would be needed to make them functional…For instance, low fuel light. Im sure there had to be a “reader” between the fuel sending unit that would read the voltage and turn the light on when the fuel got to a level. The door ajar would basically light with the courtesy light switch??

Dont anyone beat themselves up over these questions. Im not “that” interesting in getting it working but, its a cool feature, and it makes those boring little red squares on the dash actually funtional. I saw it and thought maybe someone tore out a harness at one point and my car was supposed to have it. My marti report shows nothing about “visual check panel option”.

My 69 Standard has the parking brake light in the center panel - not the instrument cluster. Not sure where it went for 70.

My low brake fluid light is in the cluster.
