What to put in your rear end

See what I did there?

Seriously though, do y’all have open rear ends, or some kinda lock/limited-slip/posi/etc thing going on?

I’ve been reading up just a little and like the sound of the Eaton/Detroit Locker differential that’s out there, a modern advancement on the Detroit Locker or something along those lines. Seems to cost around $500 which means it would be wayyy off in the future for me. But it’s got me curious.

Do you guys have open rear ends or what?

(See, I did it again. Sorry!!)

Seriously though

Check out this article. http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ccrp_1002_limited_slip_differentials/index.html It has some good information to get you started.

What are you planning on doing with your car? Are you going to drop a high horsepower crate engine in it? Are you going to do some drag racing? Are you going to keep your 8"?

I am still running my 2.79 open, but am switching it out soon. I haven’t decided between a Detroit locker and a TrueTrac. Since I am working toward building a sleeper, I am leaning toward the TrueTrac.

I have two complete set-ups that I change back and forth as I see fit. I even tapped a drain plug in the rear end to make swaps less messy. One is a 3:50 ratio that I run 95% of the time and the other is the stock 3:00 ratio that came in the 9" which I swap in for extended road trips like Power Tour. Both have Ford Traction-Locs. But if I was going to set one up today, I’d go with the Soft Locker that Royce is a big fan of.

I used to have one of them set up with a 4:11 ratio but that was WAY TOO STEEP.

Yep, Detroit TrueTrac, that’s the one that seemed good from what I had already read as well. It’s funny, in that article they say they put the Auburn unit it one of their cars, I wonder if they’ll do a follow-up article later-- from most of what I read, people seem to get less than a year out of the Auburn before it’s ruined. unless, maybe they were just making that up?

It’s so hard with online articles to tell what’s legit and what’s advertising dollars paying to get the spotlight. That’s part of why forums like this rule, actual people with actual experience and no advertising dollars telling them what to say is good or bad.

I wanna be able to drive like a normal human being, on normal streets, and take normal turns and stuff (including turning with the wheels all the way to the lock as I back into my garage) but I also want to be able to hit the gas when going in a straight line, like rolling away from a red light, and have both tires helping out. I dunno about smoking both tires, dunno if and when I’ll ever be doing that, but smoking one tire seems kinda embarrassing so there’s no way I wanna do that!!

I’m not gonna be doing a ton of racing. Probably very, very little if any. I just really don’t even like the single drive wheel / open rear end in concept.

This is the one, yeah?

It’s $50 cheaper at Summit than at RockAuto. And neither one is as cheap as the price they quote in that article. What’s up with that??

The price depends on the differential. If you had a Dana 30, it would only set you back $375. At least you don’t have a Corvette Dana 44 ($800).
