The wheel cylinders for the brakes look pretty.
There was no sign of any brake fluid leaking before I sprayed them down with brake cleaner. Any reason to replace them?
The grease used for the wheel bearings is really goopy and stringy like honey.
Should I clean everything and start over with regular bearing grease? This stuff seems to light weight.
That looks like chassis lube for ball joints, u-joints and the like although I seem to remember a wheel bearing grease a long time ago that did look like that. I don’t think that’s heavy enough for wheel bearings. Every parts store will have high temp wheel bearing grease. Get the correct grease.
The wheel cyl’s may look good from the outside, but…
So, peel back the rubber end & see if you have any fluid. If so the seals have failed. The cost for the cyl’s is sooooo cheap, try Rock auto.
Just check the width of your shoes & purchase accordingly. Best is riveted. Hard to find these days, cause they are mostly bonded. Spring look ok, but again, a few $ for a springs (combi kit). Purchase a bit of wheel bearing grease. Some are colored or near clear, so you can tell when it’s time to redo. Wheel bearings are cheap (Buy Timkin brand only!). Why clean & repack old ones when you could have had new!
So, advice is to do it right. Clean all that is reused, replace if able, and enjoy.
P.S. the backing plates get groves worn on the 3 “pads” each shoe rides on. Check & have a bit of weld put down, grind flush. This keep the brakes from grabbing.
