Wheel sizes for 71-73 Cougars

I found some lists for first gen Cougar wheel sizes, but I don’t see anything for second gen (71-73). I beleive that standard sizes, depending on the model, were 14”/15”, correct me if that’s wrong. Is anyone using anything larger and where will we begin to run into problems?

My 73 came with 14” and now has 15” wheels.

Stock from the factory the wheels were 14 X 6. As I recall 14 X 7 were an option.

Is that a factory color and what is it?

Great info, thanks.

Unfortunately, it’s mostly incorrect.

There were three sizes of wheels used for the 71-72 Cougars, 14X6, 14X7 and 15X7. What size wheel the car received depended upon the tires, engine and other options.

1973 dropped the 15X7 and added 14x5.5 steelie.

Thanks for that. Do you know of anyone using 16x8 and have you heard of any issus with that size? That’s the size I’m currently looking at.

I’m running 15X8 on my 71 and had an issue with them hitting the upper control arm at full lock. The PO had used the earlier style four bolt balljoint arms, swapped to the correct three bolt and no issues. I doubt you’d have an issue with 16X8 a long as they have about the same backspacing.

It was born with Blue Glamour Metallic. I purchased it with the current color. It’s an older maroon but I don’t know if that was a factory color.

The biggest issue is that nothing is perfectly centered in these cars, so unfortunately test fitting larger wheels and tires is your best option

Yeah, that sucks. The thing is that I can buy the wheels and tires online, mounted, balanced and delivered cheaper than buying them locally, but if they don’t fit, they’re still mine.

they make a tool that you can check clearance with that is under $100. many local shops will match or at least come close to online dealers price. it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Yes, I do remember seeing “Price Match” signs at local tire shops. Thanks for the info.
