Any thoughts out there? Clear lenses with orange bulbs or orange lenses?
I thought orange lens’ were Mustang.
I’ve run the amber lenses before and like them. I may be looking for a set in the future. I think they are from the
Maverick, Comet line.
The clear lens with orange bulbs were for 1969 Cougars ( the plastics industry hadn’t perfected the tinting / dyeing of acrylic / polycarbonate / polymethyl methacrylate plastics into the translucent orange color at that point in time ). The 1970’s used the orange plastic ( with the interior ‘egg-crate’ pattern ) and the clear bulb. There was a third version ( ! ) for the early 1970 production, again clear but with the ‘egg-crate’ pattern on the inside - sort of half-way between the two styles.
I kinda like the amber lenses over the clear. I might just have to keep my eye out for Comet or Maverick lights.
I have some sets of each type. I think my favorite are the clear fluted ones. I even have a set of later Maverick lenses/bezels without the cross bars.
Without context, the amber lens is more appealing.
But within context is what matters. I need to see each of them installed.
Regardless, my 69 is keeping the clear lens, amber bulb.
Certainly not on the Cougar parking light or Mustang (so called)Driving light. The lens ware clear with the "Egg crate pattern. But the maker lights were Amber(Orange) for 1970 production. Why else would I have added them to some of my past Cougars?
Interesting - did not know they changed those in the 70 production year. Here’s the early version clear egg crate design which was still being used in Dec 69.
I would need to see some documentation on the Amber ones being used on late 70 Cougars. My parts car 70 was a July 70 built unit and did not have Amber lenses.
I was also thinking the amber lenses came along later - for Maverick and Comet as mentioned.
There’s more than just three ways to do them especially if you are doing a restomod or just have bad chrome and don’t want to spend a ton of money…
I think the clear looks better, but the light won’t be that bright or dispersed very well. Having had two 70 Mach 1s. The grille lights are for show only. They add zero useful light
Amber yep, on my 69 vert
When I was a kid we used to call them savage lights, I know it’s not stock but the clear lenses with the amber bulbs look savage at dusk LOL
My car was built in Dearborn December 2nd, 1969 and it has clear lenses without the egg crate design.
The clear egg crate looks cool.
