Which jack usage decal was put on the Hertz G's?

I am trying to figure out which jack usage / stowage decal belongs on the Hertz G. If I go by my Marti Report and what we know, the car should have came with a standard jack usage / stowage decal as the Hertz cars did not leave the factory with Styled Wheels before going to A O Smith.

This leaves the standard decal, but there were 2 different ones. the 1967 version and the 1968 version. They are almost identical except for part number and font sizes.

The restored pictures of Hertz G 8F93S545131 (the $100k one that just sold) has the 1967 version. It was built 2 days before mine. I would like to think that they used the correct one for the restoration.

Thoughts?

1967 standard

1968 Standard

1968 Styled

Do any of the experts know if Cougars ordered with the styled steel wheel option received a different jack decal in the trunk than those with standard wheels?

FWIW, the top (1967) and bottom (styled steel wheel) decal have Mustang illustrations and the middle 1968 standard decal has a Cougar illustration.

The middle one also has a a C8WB part number, while the other two are C7ZB and C8ZB. I believe the W denotes Cougar and the Z denotes mustang part numbers.

True, and normally would say the W decal is the one for me, but I’ve seen plenty of examples of Z (mustang) parts on cougars and W (cougar) parts on mustangs. The letter only really tells you which car the part was designed for first and Cougars and Mustangs were built side-by-side. I’ve also seen original cars with D0ZB tire pressure decals on 1969 cars, which you would think would only have C9ZB decals.

Lincoln Mercury and Ford were not good at installing Jack Decals. It seems like a lot of them got the wrong one. There is a styled steel wheel decal that is correct for the XR7-G’s but that one hardly ever got used. If you care get an image of the decal that originally came on your car when it was new. If you don’t know that then the next best choice would be the one that was supposed to be there.

My original trunk lid was replaced when I got my car, so no original decal to use as a reference. This picture of an original paint XR7G 8F93J553294 built 3/19 has the C8WB STD jack decal. I will be going with this one as this is what I would expect my car to have.

That’s typical as every XR7-G was equipped with standard steel wheels and E70-14 tires from the factory as Ford could not see putting good tires on just for AO Smith to replace them with styed steel wheels (Or Rader wheels) and radial F70-14 tires.

Did they ever change the order specification once the Rader wheels were eliminated? That is to say did they ever start putting styled steel wheels on the G cars at the Dearborn factory? It would have saved a lot of hassles and money to do so. How many G cars were built after the Rader wheels were eliminated from the package.

I would think once they switched to the factory Mercury styled steel wheels that those would have been installed at Dearborn.

What I would love to get from the Ford archives are the “Delete Sheets” for the XR7-G Cougars - telling the line workers what not to put on XR-7s that were headed to Smith. When the Shelby guys got ahold of those for their cars it added to their knowledge greatly.

I also would love to know which car exactly was the last one to get the Raders. There is an often quoted memo dated May 7 notifying dealers of the problems with the Rader wheels leading to the recall. I have never seen a copy of that actual memo and can’t find it in the G Registry docs that I took over from Royce or in any of the new factory paperwork that I have received from the SAAC ‘68 Shelby Registrar. The quote is very specific so I’m sure it is based on something. If anyone out there has a copy of that memo please share it with me.

It was Scott Ferguson that pointed out to me that the wording was changed on the window stickers when the switch was made - going from “STYLED WHEELS W/SPOKE DESIGN” to “STYLED STEEL WHEELS”. The G that I have that was produced on May 6 has “..W/SPOKE DESIGN” called out and my former G built on May 9 has “STYLED STEEL WHEELS”, so it appears the switch happed somewhere in that span.

The letter:

I’m referring to the memo being quoted here - dated May 7.

I can’t seem to find a copy of the actual memo.

Maybe the author of the article would have a copy. I only haven the letter from April.

That’s a scan from Don Skinner’s book. I will check with him but I think he was just repeating that quote. I have seen it mentioned more than once dating from before his XR7-G book.
