I tried searching for a while but remain confused. Which of these styles would be correct for 1970 Cougars:
I’ll take door #2, Bob.
Yes, door #2. These are available on ebay for a reasonable price. They are well done reproductions.
Thanks. I thought it was #2 myself based on what I remember from our family’s 1970 but it’s been a while.
Would that also be the same for 69?
And '67
And 68.
Was #1 used with any Cougar?
To my knowledge I don’t know of the Mercury head key ever being used for the Cougar. I think the Mercury blanks are for the 50’s or earlier big Mercury’s.
Dealers made duplicate keys using decorative blanks in those days. For my '67 Comet (1st car), I got two keys on the standard “Ford oval” blanks, and a 2nd set on a fancy gold blank that had a full head of the god Mercury, filled in red paint.
I’m using a set I had made on the plainer Mercury-head blanks as shown in picture 2 above, because I liked the look and they were the correct dimension.
Should have dug deeper into the stuff that was in the box that came with my car. I’m guessing these old boys on the left have been with her a while.
