I have purchased a hertz g project car that will be delivered in the first weekend of August. This car will need lot of stuff including a drive shaft. I have sourced a drive shaft from a local cougar guy. I am in the process of cleaning/ redoing the drive shaft. There are reproduction u joints with the ford logo and with out the ford logo from dead nuts on, or I can get spicer u joints from work at an employee discount. The spicer u joints come in grease able and non grease able formats. Are there any other brands of u joints that might be better?
Thanks Scott
You have not said what your intentions for this car will be, full blown restoration, street worthy, see some drag racing?
Spicer is a good name brand, the ones with grease fittings are good for every use, while I like the ones without for extreme duty.
Sorry for the long reply.
Because this is a Hertz g car and will need a lot of work to get
her back on the road, I have had mixed feelings on what I want to do with the car. There will be no drag racing. I might change
the stock rear end form 273 non posi to 311 posi traction.
Thanks Scott
Scott, I had a purely stock but completely rebuilt 390 S code G with the 2.79 rear axle and it was one of the best all around driving Cougars I have ever owned. The 390 has a ton of torque and it could light up the tires if I wanted to, but in reality I never really wanted to do that more than say once or twice. What it would do was cruise effortlessly on the highway or in town and get as much as 15 mpg which really helps with a 16 gallon tank. At 75 on the interstate it felt like it could go on all day without issue. The same car with a 3.50 ratio feels like it is going to blow up at anything over about 65. Literally every modern car out there is faster than your Cougar but far less cool. Sometimes you just want to roll up the windows, turn on the AC and enjoy the rideā¦
If you can get the spicer ujoint at a discount and save some money thats the way I would go, Spicer was always a quality part I like the ones with greese fittings but either way its a good ujoint
