After pulling out my front window regulators to clean and grease, I realized there was a huge difference between the spring tension on the units.
Currently they are off the car with no window weight or load. My driver side spring tension is so tight, that if I turn the handle and let go, it just spins back to the original position. On my passenger side regulator, I can feel the spring getting tighter as I crank the handle, but it will not just jump back to its original position if I let go.
If I’d have to guess, logic tells me my driver side spring tension is too tight, and the passenger is fine. Is this right or is the passenger spring too loose?
I checked the sun dial gears on both units and they seem to be in about the same shape. None of the squared edges have been rounded off. I guess it could be the gear in the crank assembly v the dial? Any way to replace just that? I’ve been hearing a lot of mixed reviews on the repro regulators and issues regarding noise, so trying to avoid it if I can.
There is more than one brand of aftermarket window regulator. Yours has a bad brake so it’s shot. There may be a good used one available from WCCC - I would recommend finding a good original. Avoid the Scott Drake brand they are very poor.
Thanks Royce, I remember hearing that about the Drake units…just curious, what makes them bad? The regulator seems like such a simple mechanism, how could they possibly get it so wrong
Reason why I ask, I was thinking maybe I can purchase an aftermarket unit just for the Brake/Gear assembly…drill out the rivets on the original and replace? Or is it not just worth the time and effort?
