Hi, if you’re starting to dig in deep here on this car again or any other old/classic, the factory service manual (in paper as the dealer mechanics used it) is your bible and a must have. i have them for any/all classics ive owned/own. the manuals for your car are very detailed covering all aspects of the car for the dealer mechanicas to troubleshoot, verify and repair. the main book is loaded with diagrams and schematics in the back section.
as well, there are individual smaller books on ebay specific to electrical, body, interior and so forth. if you dont have them yet please get them, they’;ll make your work go so much better with less stress.
If you already have it great! but if not, here is a link down below to a PDF version for free download which is great when you’re in the house on PC or laptop, then keep the big paper one in the garage with your car.

That split loom tubing is not original. Might as well open that and see what they are hiding there. The four way connector is the neutral start switch that has been jumpered and the reverse light switch. The three wire connector is for the ignition, plus oil pressure and temp senders.

The red wire is a 1967 harness only. It is for the headlight vacuum solenoid under the hood next to the regulator.
Also, there is a plastic laminated complete wiring diagram available on Ebay for around 30 dollars. 1968 and 1967 are different enough to warrant buying the proper year schematic.
In 1968, I know of at least 3 variants of the XR7 harness…
We’ll discover which version next time I’m in AZ. FWIW, very late model year.
