My Cougar does not currently have the XR-7 badges but it now has all XR-7 features so now I want to put the pillar badges on but do not know where they should be located. Does anyone know the factory specification or possible take measurements on their XR-7 badge location to easy to find reference points?
Thanks,
Dwayne
Dwayne,
We need to know what year Cougar you have. Old farts like me forget easily.
Neal.
Duh, thought you could read my mind across the Internet (Grin,). I forget the important stuff sometimes. This is on a 1968 Cougar XR-7. So many things running in my head right now since she got got out of paint with a dark lapis blue candy pearl that looks greatg but now I have to plan for putting everything back together. Thanks for any help or guidance on these badges.
Here’s a picture of a 1968 XR7 GT it should give you a good idea for where the badges go on the C pillar.

Does your car have a vinyl top? Using that as a reference for the bottom measurement would be the best approach if it does.
I took a look at this to measure it and looks like 3 1/2" up from the fender ridge line and 3" back from the center line of the drip rail.
I found that there’s a difference in location between my 67 and 68. I believe the 68 is mounted about 1/2" lower. Easiest way is to use a template, want me to make some for you?
Dave that would be really cool if you could make those templates. If you do, would you mind putting them up on this thread? It would be a great resource for people in the future.
Yes, I have a vinyl top. I also will be removing the headliner so if there are reference holes that would be great but I am guessing that they had a template on the factory floor to drill holes after the vinyl top install.
Geez, sorry for the delay. I just got started tonight on the templates. These will reference from the installed ‘vinyl-top moulding’. Will that work for you? In other words, do you plan on installing the vinyl top and moulding, then drilling holes for the XR7 emblem? Could you PM me your mailing address so I can send some cardboard templates?
Bill, I agree that this could be a great resource for others, but what is the best way to present this? I could scan a cardboard template, but what would be the best medium to save to? What file format would retain the exact dimensions?
Had a Homer Simpson moment…DOH!!! Finally realized I was just making it more difficult than it needed to be…
Using a six-inch steel rule and a square, here’s the measurements I got:
1968
From top edge of Vinyl Top Moulding up to mounting holes 2-5/8"
From backside of ‘hockey puck’ to first hole 2-5/8"
From backside of ‘hockey puck’ to second hole 3-5/8"
1967
From top edge of Vinyl Top Moulding up to mounting holes 3-1/8"
From backside of ‘hockey puck’ to first hole 2-13/32"
From backside of ‘hockey puck’ to second hole 3-13/32"
Hole diameters are 5/32"
