XR-7 wood grain material for 69/70?

Anybody find a substitute for the wood burl? I need something close for a steering wheel (3 pieces in center of steering wheel)

Thanks, Bill

I would think any good vinyl wrap shop could print you a couple sq feet of any burl you want

If anyone has any ideas, I would also love to know. I tried different burls off of internet vinyl suppliers, but they are too red or too orange. I brought my dash to a place that does custom vinyl wraps and they said they could make something but it was like a $1000 setup fee. And the vinyl was only had a 5-year outdoor UV rating.

I’ve also a need of an XR-7 burl, as if I’m going to restore my radio bezel, all that’s available in reproduction is black Standard.

I haven’t seen a good reproduction in years. A previous owner put in an aftermarket stereo and chopped the bezel to bits, so I ended up buying a used stereo faceplate off Ebay that is far from perfect, but at least looks original between my cluster and passenger side dash panel. I bought the recently released console plate, which is advertised as not quite right, and when I put it next to my console I decided to keep my worn and slightly wrinkled original because the color and sheen were off and bothered me more than the imperfections I currently have.

Same for me - still living with my original. Has anyone had success regluing the original woodgrain down where it curls away from the bezel at the edges? It’s kinda brittle.

Ive used a heat gun & weldwood contact cement. Make a plate to cover the wood grain so you can clamp it down. I have several radio bezels, all have curled corners & loss of the “chrome” if anybody is interested.

Bill, does the weldwood contact cement hold up OK under the heat? I have used a small hobby iron (TopFlite Monokote iron) and I can reduce the bad curl-up areas of the woodgrain, but I think the heat is also causing some additional adhesion issues for me.

Like Knight717, I purchased the new console plate. Although the new replica looks really nice, it doesn’t match the “patina” of the rest of the aged woodgrain in the car, and doesn’t look right with my dark red console. Unfortunately, I had to return. Maybe if a console plate was available in black, I’d replace the console plate and the radio bezel both in the black.

I didn’t use mine, but I’m a fanboi so I didn’t return mine either. Maybe someday I will find a use for it, but I don’t mind making a one time donation to WCCC that has made probably hundreds of perfect purchases work for my car, and never steered me wrong.
