XR7-G Rust Repair

I am starting the inner fender rust repair on the XR7-G. I got the fender off tonight and took pictures. https://imgur.com/gallery/cZ0Ws

I am going to use this as a guide - http://68vert.blogspot.com/2008/05/upper-fender-apron-repair-1.html -

I have a few months to get the repair done, clean and dress up the engine bay. Hopefully I can get it done before the engine is ready to go back in.

Is there two rear splash guards installed?

Remove the two vacuum canisters to get at the metal behind. Perform a vacuum check on the canisters they look suspect.

I don’t think there are two rear splash guards. The one is just coming apart.

I will check the vacuum canisters for leaks. Are these repairable of will I need to buy new ones if they are leaking?

Have fun! I just did something similar on mine. It’s not too bad of a job.

After you remove them perform a vacuum test. The one under the battery is for the tilt and has a check valve in it. Attach a vacuum pump/connect to a running engine to the fitting that goes to the intake manifold. Attach a vacuum gauge to the other fitting. Apply vacuum and then stop, the number doesn’t matter, it should not leak down. If it does then you have to decide whether to clean off all the undercoating and try and find rust holes. If the check valve is leaking its shot.

The other tank under the hinge is for A/C and does not have a valve in it. For this one you need to plug the small fitting and attach a hand vacuum pump with gauge to the other fitting. Apply some vacuum and then stop and watch for the gauge to drop. If it does then you have holes.

Since both are reproduced and don’t have to be cleaned up that could be the way to go.

OK, sounds like I have a weekend peoject.
