XR7G Hood Scoop Hardware

Hi Gents,

I am working on fitting my original XR7G (non-functional) hood scoop to a repo 67/68 hood. When I got my car the scoop was not attached and the nuts and studs were missing. I am trying to identify the correct hardware. Does anyone know what the correct studs are ?

Also WCCC offers 2 different lock nuts. I am not sure which one is correct. Black or gold (yellow).

Here is a closeup of the attaching hardware on my G scoop. The car has been repainted in the past so I don’t know if anything was changed. Do you have the Smith blueprints? On the G hood scoop plans a “34587-S Tee Nut” is called out.

Interesting, looks like a KEPs nut and a flat washer. If the hardware is correct in the picture I should be able to match them up with the AMK catalog. If someone else chimes in that their G has the same hardware than we will know for sure.

The 34587-S is the nut that was molded into the scoop. Couldn’t find the mounting hardware in the prints unfortunately.

I have to use the nuts from AMK. The star lock washer looks original. They did not have a flat washer. The nuts from AMK are cad plated. Originals were bare steel.

The studs in original XR7-G hood scoops are cad plated. Looks like the originals were all the same length too. Probably the studs from a local hardware store that closed long ago.

It’s funny how the scoops looked homemade when viewed from the underside. I guess the hardware store mounting hardware fits right in with the handmade theme.

I’ve been looking at pictures of G cars that I have been collecting and noticed that sometimes washer are small like Phillip’s and other cars have much larger ones.

For reference, here is a pic of backside of a G scoop that I had. Notice at some point someone wanted to open it up and make a functioning scoop by cutting out the back of each recess.

To my surprise while recently digging through a bin full of rusty hardware that came with my G in 2008, I came across the original hood scoop hardware. It looks like AO Smith used 1/4-20 studs and cut them down to length after installing the hood scoop. The nuts themselves appear to be the same as the yellow chromate quarter extension nuts with mastic. This would be AMK PN: B-12833

The nuts I got from AMK. For the studs I bought 3 different sizes from McMaster-Carr as there were 3 basic lengths that the originals were cut down to based on where the stook out of on the underside of the hood.

Looks like a “restorer” got to your hood scoop and you have the hardware he left. AO Smith was really crude about everything they did and the hood scoop was no exception. Studs were left too long and they were cut at crazy angles - as an example. Nuts were plain steel with a star washer so none of the nuts look right.

Well then, I guess I will need to change my nuts…

thanks for the clarification.

Here’s a link to the nut I used - Bulk Fasteners Products — AMK Products, Inc.

The star washer came from a bulk pack that I bought from Harbor Freight. I looked on their web site and I don’t see it. It’s a typical cad plated outside star washer.

Perfect ! I think I have those already. thanks
