My Cougar has been having some emission problems and I decided -along with some other things- to work on the ignition system. As far I know, it’s all basically stock, with some standard maintenance item replacements over the years. I ordered up some parts prior to tear-down and discovered that the primary lead I received has a flat eyelet connection on the coil end, rather than the molded right-angle boot on the original wire. The resistance on the original wire matches that on the replacement, so it’s OK electrically, but the wire insulation and weather grommet are stiff with age, so I’d like to replace it. I went searching online but can only find similar lead wires with black, green, or white (1970-71) boots. The boot on my original is yellow, a near match to the yellow coil top. My first question is: What color is correct? Second: Has anyone ever seen a primary lead with a yellow boot before? If so, any thoughts on where I could buy one with a yellow boot?
Also, I decided to pull the coil out and clean the filth off of it. Imagine my surprise to find that the can is unpainted steel. Even under the mounting bracket. I’m guessing this is most likely the result of 50 years time, heat, oil, and and general wear, and that it was probably painted black originally?
Thanks, nate
