Yet another signal light question..........

Hello, I have just purchased a 68 Cougar and am having difficulty with the turn signals as most have apparently. I have read alot of the tech stuff from this site and the net and have still to figure out what is going on. I’ll tell you what I know so far…

Brake lights work fine… running lights work fine.

Dash lights turn on, but don’t flash… Four ways turn on, but don’t flash.

No flashing lights on the exterior of the vehicle, no lights come on when turn signal depressed in either direction. (on exterior of car)

When I bought the car, the owner had already purchased the electronic replacement for the sequential flasher part (CE-1) of the “bits in the trunk” (the white box half).

I have replaced the white box with the new electronic unit and nothing has changed. I have noticed however that the trunk is missing the emergency relay and there is just the 5 prong female connector and ground plug coming from the harness of the rest of the units in the trunk. Is this required to be there for this system to function properly?

I was about to go online and purchase the “complete replacement” for the units in the back (C8WY-13A366-AS ) but am kind of hesitant as I may only need the emergency relay as it is missing. (emergency relay is only $40 compared to the $200 for the complete replacement of everything.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Cheers!

Goose, welcome! I think that that you have to have the relay plugged in for the system to work. Do you have a meter or at least a test light to see if you are getting power in back? There is an inline fuse, under the dash, for the turn signals, have you checked that?

Hello xr7g428! And thanks for the welcome!
I have a meter and have power in the back (only 2amps). When I bought the car there wasn’t an inline fuse present but I have place one there and the issues I posted above are after I placed the fuse in. I can’t seem to locate the 3 pin turn signal relay which is apparently “under the dash”. I have been under there a few times today (my back is Killin me!!) and cannot locate it for the life of me. There is a large silver cannister under the dash that wiring seems to be going into or around, could this be the turn signal flasher “can” that i’ve seen ppl talk about? If you have a link to or have some pics of the parts under the dash that I should need to check on, that would be greatly helpful. I’m kind of an idiot when it comes to electrical stuff but I am tryin’ my best! I’m trying to keep my frustration lvl to a minimum tho! lol!

Cheers!

Goose, did you ever get your turn signals working?

Hello smlcatman, and thank you for your reply. In answer to your question… not as yet, have had another fella under the dash and neither of us can locate the flasher that is supposed to be there. I have seen a pic of it online and it is about the size of a Loonie (Canuk here :stuck_out_tongue: ) but it is no where to be found. All the same as above, no change in the operation of the car at all. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for my late reply, haven’t been online in a while!

Cheers!
