Officially the 1967 model year went from July 1, 1966 through June 30, 1967. Ford finishes up every model year with final build - out during the second July of the model year. In the case of 1967 that would be July 1967. The door tag date (scheduled date) could be as late as 20U. The actual date could be as late as the last day of July 1967. Ford / Mercury would start changing out parts and tooling on the line as soon as the final 1967 was assembled.
Actual date of manufacture for the last one would only be able to be answered by Kevin Marti. Kevin owns the rights to the entire database.
According to Marti’s book The Mustang and Cougar Tag Book Tag Code V August of 1967 completed VINs ranged from 617600 to 651900. Keep in mind that VINs are not produced sequentially so there is tremendous overlap from month to month. Car that have production problems are often completed long after the buck date.
Wow, that’s a bunch of 67’s coming off the line very late. I see why they started also producing Cougars in San Jose in that timeframe. The same book shows Dearborn also produced 1968 Cougars 500000 to 505100 in Aug 67. So they produced all those 67 Cougars in the same month as they started cranking out 68 Cougars. Did they ever have both model years in production on the same day, or did they finish up 67’s early Aug and then start 68’s in late Aug?
No. At the end of the production year inventory needed to be taken, plant and line rearranged for the next years models, assembly practices tested and workers retained on new processes
The problem is there was no numeric order - it could be the last one built, or 1000 from the last one, or 10 from the last one. Only Kevin can tell us what the last one was.
Kevin can not tell us which one rolled off of the line last.
He can tell you what was the highest serial number, or if was built on the last day of production or how many cars were built on the last day. The highest serial number may not have been built on the last day, but he could answer that question.
As you stated Royce, since cars were not built in serial number order and there are no known records of what order they rolled down the line on any given day he can not get that specific.
