1967 Mercury Cougar XR7

Hello, I am Mr.Schrum from North Carolina…I recently picked me up a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 for $1,400…Runs and drives…Just got to get it running
My Grandfather had a Brand New Mercury Cougar back in 1967, I’ll have to find a photo of it…I have a few photos from the person I bought it from.I worked on it today and due to the weather I couldn’t get it Towed to my home

Pros:
Complete Car
Nice Paint
Nice Interior
Great tires
After market Breather
After market Speakers
Original Cover
Original Spare Tire Cover
Tools in the Trunk
Lights work

Cons:
Roof is rusted through in two small places
Needs a battery
Tires need inflating
Clean out Rats nest in Trunk :greenchainsaw:

I have always wanted a Cougar, and never thought I would own one

The issues with this one is the Rust where the Top used to be, a lil rusted through…The console (Clock) needs to be placed back in and the interior needs to be washed

Other then that She’s a complete car, even has the Original tools in the Trunk and I “think” the original Spare tire, I could be wrong…Was re-painted in 1992[/img]

Looks like a nice project Cougar. How long has it been sitting? If a long time you may want to rebuild the brakes before driving it.

It was driven about few months ago according to the Previous Owner, however it wants to turn over but won’t…Like the Fan turns but doesn’t go all the way around…We put some Starting Fluid,Oil,Gas in it…I think it may rev right up once I put an actual Battery in.The Glove box needs to be put back in.This thing looks to have been restored in 1992.Can anyone confirm a Original speakers to a '67 Cougar XR7 ?..Also How can I clean the cloth and the interior…Sorta stinks in there like a dusty musty smell.Saw a spider and about had a Heart attack…Was $1,400 a great deal…or a Rip off ? :beerchug:

What does a Original Steering Wheel look like ?

Welcome aboard!

1400…you did pretty good, IMO. Try it out with a fresh battery, and see what happens. As far as cleaning/making the inside smell better…get out your favorite can of elbow grease, and go to town! Other than that, your option is remove/replace the interior…

Keep after it!

Yeah, Most around here go for $1,800 without a Engine or Tranny…I’m just going to put things back in place and clean it up…Does the Antenna come off, or go down.Because makes me wonder, if I can get it smelling nice nice and fix the Roof

Any suggestions on fixing the Top ?

Great score! Antenna can be removed and replaced easily. Most unscrew from the top in some manner. New carpet will do wonders for the smell. Use the above mentioned elbow grease method with a good disinfectant on ALL plastic and vinyl surfaces, dash, dash pad, seats, headliner , door panels, kick panels, package tray, etc. As for the roof, there are several options depending on the damage. A pic of the roof damage would help determine the best plan of action. Here is a video from West Coast Classic Cougar on one approach to fix your roof. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDyBd9Wx1vk .

Here’s another way to deal with a rusty roof:

That is a sure cure for a rusty roof! It looks like you got a pretty good deal for the money. I would make sure you have a good gas line filter before starting. You may need to drain and flush those lines as new gas gets old quick. pictures of the roof and keep us posted on starting issues as you will get lots of tips here.

Not to hijack, but did you get new wheels Jody?

look like s steal for the money good luck
where are you located

Are you planning to install a new vinyl top?

OldWood: These were supposed to be my snow tire wheels, but I liked the way they looked so I got some new 14 inch tires for the summer.

Located in North Carolina right outside of Charlotte, Thanks for the advice man…I’m bringing it home today “hopefully”

Welcome to the Classic Cougar Community! For the price it seems like you got a good deal. Your steering wheel is a factory 1967 unit with the sports grip wrap.

$1400 is a steal! Complete original XR7,…straight brite-work, bumperettes, a clean looking grill and you are going to reinstall the factory clock…! As long as the floor pan, cowl and electrical check out…even if it requires some motor or transmission work, you could not have done better. As said…when you have an opportunity, shoot some pics of the rust damage on the roof. There are several schools of thought with rust repair,…some easy and some not so easy. If you are planning to have a new vinyl top installed, it may be easier than imagined. Keep us up on your cleanup/progress…think you have a good one there. Welcome.

Love the dash switches. Looks like some used old Atari joysticks on them.

Plans for the Cougar
-Cut out the Rust and sand it smoothly
-Put Sheet metal over the Cropped metal
-Paint the Top with 4 layers of Black Rustoleum
-Get Pawpaws Brand new interior parts from the Attic and replace the current interior

The Paint isn’t Original…I wish I could find out what it was, I guess once I get it home I can run through the Glove box

How can I tell if the Brakes are bad ?..The light was on when I cranked it up, but seemed to do like a every day car

Nice find! Good luck with your new baby.

The CCOA VIN/code info and a Marti Report will tell you everything you need to know about it.

It wants to turn over but it wont

I don’t wana have to cut the Roof off, Just wana patch it up to the best of the Ability and drive it when its cleaned up

Regarding cutting the roof off, just in case you are actually considering it and didn’t know this already (I just learned it on this forum in the past couple months) you can’t cut the roof off and hope to have a safe and driveable car unless you install bracing on the underside before cutting the roof off. So just don’t jump into cutting the roof off without doing research first into how to do that without ruining the car. Jody can tell you all about it, no doubt.

Sounds like you got a great deal. Congrats!!

By “wants to turn over” is the engine firing/combustion occurring or no fire…or when you apply power to the starter, through the battery, the motor will not rotate? There is a well known problem with the XR7 in which the motor will fire when the key is held in the start position, but dies as soon as the key is released. Fortunately there are only a few of gremlins to chase out with a no fire situation.

The Fan rotates more then half way, and its like I think I can, I think I can…We didn’t have a real battery in there, so I am going to pop one in there and test it out again…

The Brake light came on, not sure what that meant

Very, very excited to get it home and get it going

When I get it home, I’ll send photos on here to show the Rust…I am not sure I’ll put another Top back on it though

Does anyone have a Dash cover, as you can see mine is warped LOL…Taking DONATIONS
