1968 XR7-G hood scoop functionality

So my question of the day is was there ever a functional ram air XR7-G style hood scoop setup in 1968 or was it just the (similar to) eliminator style scoops on the 428 based cars that were functional?

My next question is does anyone have a template of the proper hood cut-out of the 1968 model year?? Definitely not a round hole I know that much from the 1970 versions I’ve seen.

Here is a picture of Bill’s(xr7g428) ultra rare XR7G 428 it has the functional ram air scoop because of the 7 Litre 428CJ engine.

There were three hood scoops in 1968: GT-E non functional, G non functional and 428 Cobra Jet functional. The only one that had a hole cut out in the hood was the functional 428 CJ. The hole cut out was round and not too well done as it was reported done by hand. So no hole cuts out for the typical G scoop.

As it turns out, the scoop on my GT-E was cut out at some point by the previous owner. I wanted to verify if it was working, that is to say it was bringing air into the engine compartment. As it turned out, it does not. The air coming in through the radiator swamps the incoming air at the scoop and in every case, air comes out of the scoop instead of going in. To really make it functional it would probably need to be much higher up in the air stream and also sealed under the hood in the same manner as the functional scoop on the 428 CJ cars.

Thanks for the clarification, I realize even when done right there is actually little to no performance gains with this. The way the air flows a cowl style intake where it takes from near the windshield would be best.

Again this is more for my knowledge and factory looks even though a GTE/G scoop car functional is not correct. Hmmm, I do have a really nice 428PI motor that would look nice under the hood though. Lol.

Not quite the 427 GT-E had the non functional hood scoop along any XR-7G that was not a 428CJ. Any 1968 R code Cougar, GT, GT-E or XR-7G had the functional ram air scoop like Bill’s 428XR7G.

Ya I kind of typed that in wrong and meant the 428 models.

Now this is interesting stuff to me. I wasn’t aware any early cougars came with this type of hood scoop.
Mine is a '67. A previous owner put a similar hood scoop on it. Said is was supposed to be from a '68 or '69 mustang. My plan was to replace it with a shaker, but these look good enough that I might just leave the way it is.
The PO cut a hole in the hood, and didn’t do such a great job of attaching it. Does anyone have any pictures of what the underside should look like.

Just my two cents but I think your hood scoop looks great. I’d keep it if it were on my car before I went with a shaker style scoop.

With the right set up, you would see gains from it. The proper ram air set up, doesn’t allow the heat from the rad/engine, to overcome the incoming air to the carb, since there is a seal from the intake to the hood.

True, I was more commenting on the lack of air that flows over the hood in that area and circulates best around the windshield area, but I am sure there would be some benefit of cooler air directly into the carb rather than the engine bay.

I like it the way it is as well.

I wouldn’t underestimate this kind of hood scoop for effectiveness. Just for example, I had a 71 XR7 that had a Cobra jet shaker scoop from a torino. This was the kind that came more to a point in the center and had the two openings in the front. When I first put it on, I didn’t bolt it down since it had to be modified to work. As Im leaving work that day I put it on, a friend in a 70 Boss 302 Mustang took off from a set of lights in front of me, so I thought I would show him a thing or two. As soon as the flapper in the shaker opened up, I thought the thing was going to fly out of the hole in the hood. It really was scooping up that much air, that It really did need to be bolted down. Since the opening on the 428 CJ scoop is so much larger than the openings on the shaker I had, I would say you would have no problem with good air flow into the carb. I know it isn’t as good as the track cars like to have, but it does work.

I’m thinking of making a functional XR7-G style scoop rather than the eliminator style, i.e. tiny little holes for air flow, lol. But I like the look better than the eliminator style used on the 428 cars.

If you don’t like the tiny faux hole openings go with something like the functional G force hood.

Lol, thanks I’m good with the stock one.. You must get some good air flow with that one.

First time I’ve seen the GForce site. Has some nice stuff on there.

Just curious, how to you prevent water from going into your carb from a functional hood scoop? Like say driving on a rainy day or foggy morning?

I can’t say for others but I’ve got all the parts from a true 428 Ram air cougar I’m going to use. They had a vacuum controlled flapper door with switch under the dash that you could open and close the flapper with. Not that my car will see much rain if possible.

Here are some pictures, not mine but you get the point.

Greeting all… my 17 year old just bought a 68 1/2, ‘R’ code, 428 CJ, Cougar which has the (original) hood you are speaking of! The 8 original mounting screws exclusive to the 68 1/2 cars… functional… I’ll try to post a picture…

What can you share about the R code your 17year old just purchased. Have you contacted Bill Wquay to update the 1968 428 registry?

I am looking forward to seeing additional photos and hearing about it.
