1969 cougar 351 performance group

I have a question about my non xr7 convertible 1969. I have a Marti report which states has a 351 4 barrel & 351 performance group. I looked further an the buck tag on the core support has GT on the tag. This car has a factory strip on hood with 351. An a cougar head on edge of hood. This car has a factory tach an Decor interior. I cannot find out what came with the gt an is the tach put in by the factory or did some one upgrade an put tach an wiring in car? I appreciate any help so I can understand. This car came with power disc brakes ,ac an power steering an console bucket seats

Someone probably changed to a tachometer, the Marti doesn’t say anything about an Eliminator package? that would be the only way to get the tachometer in a non-XR7 for 1969.

351 performance group was the power dome hood stripe, heavy duty shocks, springs, and big front sway bar.

Why does the buck tag have GT ? I agree about the tach. I was told today dealership may have put the tach in dash because the car has the wiring harness for tach. The Marti report does not state any thing about tack. Thank you for helping

Can you show us a picture of the tach? Most likely it is a Rocketman tach. It is a very desirable modification. If it looks like it belongs there it would be a Rocketman product.

Just for Grin’s this is the rocketman tach in a 69 Cluster for your comparison.

Noice, where is the like button?

Not that type of tach. It appears like a xr7. 6000 rpm.

If the car originally came without a tach, you must replace the entire underdash harness (as well as headlight and alternator harnesses) if you then install a factory Ford tach (usually by replacing the dash cluster). If your underdash harness has the Ford factory tach plugs, that indicates that someone has exchanged all of the wiring, or, it came with the tach-configured wiring originally. I would bet on the latter.

Rocektman offers both 6000 RPM and 8000 RPM but if your looks like an XR7 it was probably a dealer addition. ( note the different button in the middle)

My dash looks like the one on top. Silver an black buttons. Probably dealer installed because big impossible almost to change all the wiring.

We definitely need a picture of that. It sounds like they installed the XR7 dash panel.

I do believe the 351 performance package was also available on a XR-7. What are the 3rd and fourth characters of your Cougar’s VIN? If 92 then it is a Standard, if 94 then it is a XR-7.

edit body codes

My cougar is a 92 an has decor interior

I removed the dash cluster and the wiring is factory for the tach. The wiring appears to have never been touched. This car is not a xr7 This car is basic an this car has more options then a xr7 this car was made early nov 1968. An the buck tag has gt. Thank you for helping

This topic made me look at my Marti report for my 69 XR-7 351-4v

Your car was actually produced on September 25, 1968 – seven days behind schedule.

My car was made 2 months after your car. My Marti report doesn’t say gt. It says 351 performance group, however the buck tag on my car says GT. Thank you for the information.

I can’t say why your Cougar has the XR-7 stuff in it. But I have put the full XR-7 wiring and instruments in to standard Cougars a couple times and it came out looking like it did from the factory. So it is totally possible that somebody did a complete swap in yours. If it were mine, I would make it a sweet driver with what it has and enjoy it.

Edit; With the lower dash being White it does not match up with the "6A’ interior, as that is Black Leather Bucket seats, it woud have had a Black lower dash. I also see your Floors are White. Your Marti states the car was “4” Emerald Metallic. Your floors should also be painted that color, though not as well as the outside.

Please post a few pics:
