1969 factory power dome stripe

Hi
I’m new to the CCC and find it a great place to hang out. I’m wondering if anyone out there would know if the 1969 factory black 351 power dome stripe came with a matt finish or a gloss finish. My local graphics expert is suggesting a matt finish. I’m not so sure if I’m talanted enough to keep the wax away from it. Any help you guys could give me would be appreaciated.

thanks

The power dome vinyl was non gloss.

Just a note, you know these are available repro, correct?

Thanks for the info. I bought a stripe kit on line and am not happy with it. It came with 351 and CJ 428 sections which are intended to be pieced into the stripe. The pieces are not the correct size and won’t fit, the font is incorrect and the finish is gloss. I’m thinking of gussie-ing up my snowblower and lawn mower with it. I found out later that a local reputable graphics company has a scan of an original factory stripe and will reproduce and install it for a reasonable price. The only question is the type of finish. Interestingly the 351 font on the stripe is different than shown in the factory brochure which was likely an early artist’s creation rather than a photo.

I have a '69 Vert “M” code with GT Performance Package. I’m also trying to locate the Power Dome Stripe as well as how the original pinstripping down the beltline appeared (dual stripes, I believe). I have found various versions of the Power Dome online and since we are painting the car, I need to get an original replacement. Mine appeared to be flat black. I’d be interested in your source to purchase a set (within reason). Love to see some pics of Vehicles that have these on them.

I have a factory brochure showing the dual pinstripe. The stripe is white over darker colors and black over the lighter colors. The upper stripe looks to be narrower than the lower stripe and about 1/2" shorter in front. I’m not sure this can be taken as 100% accurate as the photos could have been retouched or an artist’s impression.
The local graphics shop I mentioned usually charge a setup fee but have agreed to waive it for my stripe. They gave me a sample of the 3M matt black vinyl and I think it looks great. I need to check in with them on my installation and will ask the cost of running off more than one stripe.

The OEM version had sharper corners than the repro, is 55 1/2" long and I believe 9 1/2" wide at the rear. I’m installing a scoop so mine will be approx 48" long so it disappears into the scoop.

I’d be interested in seeing that pinstripe. At least it’s the only document that gives me some idea of what it should be. What would you guess the width of these pinstripes are?

Here’s a brochure that shows the original 351 Power Dome Stripe. If your graphics company can reproduce this then I would be interested in the cost. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/70B302Cat/scan0002.jpg (you’ll need to possibly cut and paste this into your browser.)

Thanks for the feedback. Hope to hear from you soon.

I found this excerpt from the CCOA judging guidelines re pinstripes:

Stripes: Must be of the original type, color, and material, and placed in proper locations. This is to include Body Pin Stripes, Eliminator Stripes, etc. Aftermarket Pin Striping is a deduction. The Paint Stripes on the ‘67 through ‘70 Cougar consist of two Stripes, which follow the top edge of the Body line. For these four years, there is approximately a ½ inch gap in the Stripes at the Door edges, and the Fender and Quarter Extension seams. Ford put a piece of tape at the seams before applying the Stripes, thus the gap in the Stripes. For ‘67 and ‘68, the Stripes are the same width, approximately 3/32" wide, with a 5/16’s" space between them. For ‘69 and ‘70, these sizes are the same, except in some instances, the top or bottom Stripe may be larger in size. The Stripes for ‘67 through ‘70 end abruptly, approximately a ½ inch from the front and rear edges of the car. These Stripes do NOT join together at the ends.

The photos in the link above are more clear than my brochure.

The link you provided to the photo showing the powerdome stripe is interesting. The photos showing the stripe in my brochure do not have the cougar head decal. I was always under the impression the cougar head was installed on the Eliminator only. My graphics company can reproduce the stripe but not the cougar head as the original they had did not have the head. Mustangsunlimited sell this decal separately .

The scan on the bottom top is from a '69 factory brochure. It’s difficult to see in the scan but the outside corners of the stripe are more squared off than the cougar head stripe scan on the bottom. The squared off version without the cougar head more closely resembles a scan of an OEM stripe I’ve seen.
It’s interesting the descriptions are different, with one listing the cougar head and the other not. Is the stripe with the cougar head a later version ? My XR7 was built in January 1969. Now I’m wondering which stripe is correct. Anybody know why the difference?

Don’t they have different types of material with different finishes that they can use to create a stripe to your specifications?

They have a gloss and matt finish in different colors but are suggesting the matt was more of a factory finish.

I’ve seen a few original hoods w/ stripe/dome in them. They were all curved corners at nose. Not to say the “cornered” ones were never installed. I had a local shop make up mine 15+ years ago. I recall ,all that was avail were the ones w/ interchangeable 351/428. That’s why I had mine done. It is NOT as per factory due to suttle changes to better align it. They even redid the cat to be even more agressive!
My guess the corners proved difficult to install, as the curved ones are no picnic! I did a “install” write up on this years ago… have no idea where it is on the WWW anybody know?

Good luck!

Don at West Coast Classic Cougar has a youtube video on how to install this power dome stripe. His is a CJ 428 but the video is pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmoiW5OsxSk

Great video but I think I’ll leave the installaton to the experts. I’m not sure if I’ll install the cougar head but I do like the look.

'69 Eliminators did not receive the power dome stripe, with or without the cougar head. The '70 Eliminator hood stripe is kinda sorta similar, but didn’t incorporate either the cougar head or engine size call-outs like the '69 stripe.

I have heard that the stripe on 428 cars had the cougar head, while the one on 351 cars did not. I’ve yet to see any official documentation of this though.

I am installing a WCCC repro scoop and will have the stripes disappear into it.
I don’t know if the scoop was an option on the non 428 cars but I like the look. In my opinion the cougar head, stripes and the scoop are a great combination and give the cat a menanacing look.

I put this blog together that might help with info about the 351 Power Dome hood stripe,

That was a great write up with good illustrations. One thing that certainly perpetuated the GT vs. 351 Performance Group is the “buck” tag. My 69 vert’s “buck” tag shows GT. The car was built in Oct. 68. Perhaps later cars’ buck tags show something different for the 351 Performance Group? Just a thought. I think the Eminger Report states 351 Performance Group but Marti shows…

Your car was actually produced on October 28, 1968 – six days behind schedule.

Glad you liked the blog I put together about the Hood Dome Stripe.
I just got the Marti report for my 69 Cougar XR7, 351 Performance Group today. It says ,GT Equipment Group not 351 Performance Group. Marti has to be wrong as I have the original window sticker and doesn’t say GT Equipment Group. It does say 351 Performance Group.
My Marti report shows no information on Bucked tag, just… ? Says my car was built on 7/7/1969.

That’s very cool. I’ll take a look at my Original Invoice and post it up tonight and perhaps I can scan the “buck” tag off the Rad Support, too.
