1970 Eliminator 351C FMX traction Lock

Hi.

We recently bought a nicely optioned 70 Eliminator in Competition Orange with a 351C, FMX and trac lock.

I am running into 2 things. The reverse lights do not come on, although the reverse housing assemblies test fine via direct 12V.

The FMX reverse shifter harness is there and plugged in, and the single lead from it as well into the main harness at thenfire wall.

I have seen “iffy” info here and there stating the Neutral switch can be adjusted to have the reverse lights come on if they do not light up, but is this true in regards to an FMX?

Is this true or false?

ALSO. I have the distributor Modulator system. Does it matter which “end” of the modulator (the one with the 2 wires that plug into the blue box under dash) is used for the FMX LONG speedo cable, and the other end for the SHORT instrument speedo cable? I assume no, but Im not certain. Does anyone have a picture that is correct?

Im also just doing some detailing on my Eliminator. Unfortunately I don’t have lots of “specific info” in regards to original paint daubs and dashes, chalkmarks etc.

The car was “restored” 4 years ago, but nothing was recorded by that person in the way of “auto archeology”. I do NOT have the build sheet sadly. Any idea on the color bands on the driveshaft?

Thanks in advance!
Larry

X color codes - after January 1 would be considered late.

Thanks, now I have to decipher what the paint colors are by abbreviations.

Hi Larry,

Looks like all the '70 Eliminators with 351C-4V / FMX automatic build sheets I have show the same driveshaft codes:

CH - LA - YL
Chartreuse? - Lavendar? - Yellow

You’ll have to do some more research to confirm what the abbreviations actually mean.
Check the ConcoursMustang.com forum.

Here’s mine. 1970 428CJ/4-speed close.
Any assistance in reading my codes?

Mike, That color code for 351C 4V FMX CH LA YL is the same as my 351W 2V FMX XR-7

Chuck’s build sheet says Light Blue, Orange and Green for a 428 4 speed drive shaft. The drive shaft would also have a crudely applied stripe near the rear to indicate the rear in pale yellow and the final letter of the part number near the center. The stripes were crudely applied in the balancing lathe with a paint brush and they varied quite a bit in quality.

I see the LB code for light blue. I also see “OG” and “WT”. Maybe Olive Green and White?
btw, thanks for better eyes than mine!

I did not see the WT which means the original stripes were Light Blue, Orange Green and White.

I would think “OG” = Orange

So, Light Blue / Orange / White

Good guess!

Well, if no one really knows then it’s my word against the concours judges!  :innocent:

Correction Chuck’s build sheet says Light Blue, Orange and White.

Are there any photos of how the paint stripes actually appear available?

Jack at Dead Nuts On does very accurate reproductions. You can look through his website to see lots of detail photos.

Jack normally does pretty decent reproductions but I recently received a drive shaft from him that was off. The stripes were the right color for a four speed car. The car actually had a C6. Fortunately the length and diameter and the input yoke were correct for an automatic so I just had to repaint the stripes to correct everything.
