I am new to the board. I tried searching the older posts but I couldn’t find anything about car covers. I apologize if this is a duplicate post.
I am looking for a nice fitting, good quality cover for my dads 1970 Eliminator. It will be stored inside in the basement garage. I don’t foresee it ever being outside for more than a drive except maybe at a car show. It might have cats and misc basement critters to deal with.
Lots of on line sources for a good Cougar specific fit cover. I’ve had a couple Evolution cloth covers for my Cougar that have worked well. A buddy of mine shared a tip to help extend the life of a quality cover. When you buy your cover also buy a thin inexpensive cover to put over your “good” cover. I got a Budge cover off EBay for like $40 to catch garage dust, cat tracks etc- when that gets dirty then toss it. Your “good” cover is still like new.
Thanks for the good tip! I will keep that in mind!
I have been skeptical of all the different “Cougar specific” ones online because I am surprised that many different companies are offering a custom cover for the cougar, which is why I wanted to see if anyone had recommendations or ones to avoid.
Two good suggestions so far, anyone else have any?
So there have been good recommendations but my question is do I need a $500 cover to adequately protect the car in the basement? It will only be used outside at maybe an occasional car show. Can I get by with one in the $200 range and still get adequate protection?
You don’t need a $500 cover for indoor use. You just need a breathable dust cover. I have had my indoor cover for 12 years and it still is in great shape.
I use a Budge for garage storage… It was about $100 at O’Reilly. Keeps the dust off, soft as can be. A little oversized, but it lets me leave the antenna on.
I have had no issues with the Dustop. It has held up wel. Just didn’t remember who made it when I posted before. A few years ago I had the hooks holding a ladder give out, landing the ladder on my car. The cover protected the paint.
Wow that is impressive!! I ordered it tonight, I also took mr580’s advice and ordered a $30 Amazon cover to put over the nice one in case the cats decide to climb on it and claw at it. They might live a longer life if they don’t mess up the expensive cover!
One think to think about when getting a car cover…instead of poking a hole in your cover for the antenna, get a removable mast like the fox body mustangs have. I’ve put them on my last 4 cars (including 2 '70 eliminators). You can get them in natural or black. The new base lines up with the existing factory mounting holes, with the exception of cutting off one alignment nub on the plastic part of the new base.
The other option I’ve seen is people poke the hole but put a rubber grommet there. That works, too.
My dustop came with a plastic gromet for when you make the antenna hole. It has not frayed at all. I don’t remember the procedure to make the hole since it was 12 years ago.
Let me know exactly what you went with please. I’ve got a 70 Eliminator and I’d like to purchase a new car cover for it. So I want to know how well yours fits and the pros/cons about it.
One way to line up the hole would be to temporarily remove the antenna and cover the car. The opening in the passenger fender is where the grommet should be centered.
Might take a little time (but I needed a new antenna anyhow), but that could work…
I ended up going with the California Cover company Dustop cover. It is a custom cover and with COVID I still haven’t gotten it yet. I will let you know once I get it and install it.
Thanks for the tips on the antenna. I asked for the free grommet kit for it.
One note with the California Cover company Dustop. There is no option for Eliminator on their online order form. Make sure to email them and tell them it is for an Eliminator. They have a separate pattern that allows for the rear wing.
So the cover finally came today, (thanks COVID) so I am looking into getting it on and installing the antenna grommet. Excuse my rookie question but it appears to remove the antenna, you literally have to remove everything. Is that correct? Anyone have any pointers for a quick removal/ reinstall since I am just taking it off to add the antenna hole and grommet.
