460 swap

So read a little on doing the 460 swap… Anyone here do it? Worth it?

Thanks

Thanks

I did it in my 68 Mustang it fits right in actually easier to change plugs on and headers than with a FE in the engine bay. I used the Crities motor mounts and headers. I have an Edelbrock Air Gap intake with a Nitrous plate it does sit high in the engine bay, I wanted to run a CJ Mach 1 hood scoop but I dont think it has enough clearance. So Iam running a Tear Drop. I have not fired the motor yet hopefully in the spring.

Rocketman did a nice article about this:

I always liked Rocketman’s swap. It looks like a factory set up.

Looks like the 460 is the red headed step child . I have a chance to get one for a very fair price , but I’m not getting any feed back as to if it’s worth Hot Rodding or not ( Vs. a 390 , 429 Thunder Jet ).

The 460 is a great engine to hot rod especially if you want cubic inches, they are torque monsters lots of good heads intake manifolds and other go fast parts for the engine. The 429 Thunder Jet is basically a small 460, I love FE engines but the 429 460 engines will make more power per dollar spent.

I did a 460 swap in my 70 back in the 90’s. Ran it as a daily driver for years. The 460 is still in the 70. But it’s been sitting and fizzling away for the past few years. Bob’s 460 definitely cam out nicer than mine did. Not sure what he used for mounts and headers. I used the Crites kit in the beginning, but changed to FPA shorty headers. The Crites kit seemed to lift the engine pretty high and it was a bit forward. MPG head service in Colordo did make a mount and header kit a while back—they still might.
All the torque is pretty nice.

The Crites motor mounts do seem to sit the engine high, I think the forward look is because of the design of the engine since Iam using a stock c6 crossmember.

I know the bottom end is stronger ( on a SCJ ) but , do 428 SCJ heads flow better ( at high way speeds ) then reg. CJ heads.
I’m looking to build a 460 .
Can it (460/ CJ OR SCJ heads) handle a nitrous ( rare trips to the strip ) use. ??? As cool as it may look , a "Hole ridden " 460 “Coffee Table” is not what I’m looking for.
This is a med. engine build. Or I’d be shopping for a SCJ engine swap.

428CJ/SCJ heads are exactly the same. Neither will work on a 460 block, though.
Anyhow, the 460 is a very heavy engine. I highly recommend aftermarket aluminum heads, both for their better flow characteristics and to take some weight off the nose of the car. Cost should be in the same ballpark as a set of ported and reconditioned factory heads.

If you’re building a 460, you can get 500 hp no problem with standard DOVE heads that have been cleaned up a little. You don’t need a bunch of expensive parts.

Shane built his 69 with a 429 and then build a bigger engine for it.

Also, nearly every engine forum now has a section where actual dynoed builds are listed with power levels and parts recipes are detailed. Here’s the place to find the build you want.

Many thanks , the “460ford.com” web site is a wealth of great ( step by step / HP gains ) info .
